Year 6 Volume of Prisms and Cylinders Worksheet — Level 3 — Answers
Show your working. Use the π button on your calculator and round to 1 decimal place.
1.A cylinder has a radius of 7 cm and a height of 3 cm. Find its volume, correct to 1 decimal place.
Answer: 461.8 cm3
- V = π × r2 × h = π × 72 × 3
- = π × 147
- ≈ 461.8 cm3
2.A rectangular prism has a volume of 120 cm3. Its base is 4 cm by 6 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 5 cm
- Base area = 4 × 6 = 24 cm2
- Height = 120 ÷ 24 = 5 cm
3.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 20 cm and height 6 cm. The prism is 7 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 420 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 20 × 6 = 60 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 60 × 7
- = 420 cm3
4.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 14 cm and height 7 cm. The prism is 15 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 735 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 14 × 7 = 49 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 49 × 15
- = 735 cm3
5.A rectangular prism has a volume of 120 cm3. Its base is 3 cm by 5 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 8 cm
- Base area = 3 × 5 = 15 cm2
- Height = 120 ÷ 15 = 8 cm
6.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 6 cm and height 5 cm. The prism is 14 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 210 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 6 × 5 = 15 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 15 × 14
- = 210 cm3
7.A cylinder has a radius of 2 cm and a height of 16 cm. Find its volume, correct to 1 decimal place.
Answer: 201.1 cm3
- V = π × r2 × h = π × 22 × 16
- = π × 64
- ≈ 201.1 cm3
8.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 16 cm and height 4 cm. The prism is 4 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 128 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 16 × 4 = 32 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 32 × 4
- = 128 cm3
9.A rectangular prism has a volume of 105 cm3. Its base is 7 cm by 5 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 3 cm
- Base area = 7 × 5 = 35 cm2
- Height = 105 ÷ 35 = 3 cm
10.A cylinder has a radius of 7 cm and a height of 17 cm. Find its volume, correct to 1 decimal place.
Answer: 2616.9 cm3
- V = π × r2 × h = π × 72 × 17
- = π × 833
- ≈ 2616.9 cm3
Marking tips
- Give credit for correct method even when the final answer slips — the working shows where the thinking went right.
- For open-ended tasks, use the success criteria as a checklist rather than looking for one "right" answer.
- Celebrate what went well first, then pick one thing to work on next.
