Year 6 Volume of Prisms and Cylinders Worksheet — Level 2 — Answers

Show your working. Volume is measured in cubic units (cm³).

1.A rectangular prism is 4 cm long, 12 cm wide and 7 cm high. Find its volume.

Answer: 336 cm3

  1. V = length × width × height = 4 × 12 × 7
  2. = 336 cm3
2.A rectangular prism has a volume of 315 cm3. Its base is 7 cm by 5 cm. Find its height.

Answer: 9 cm

  1. Base area = 7 × 5 = 35 cm2
  2. Height = 315 ÷ 35 = 9 cm
3.A rectangular prism has a volume of 360 cm3. Its base is 6 cm by 10 cm. Find its height.

Answer: 6 cm

  1. Base area = 6 × 10 = 60 cm2
  2. Height = 360 ÷ 60 = 6 cm
4.A rectangular prism is 8 cm long, 5 cm wide and 7 cm high. Find its volume.

Answer: 280 cm3

  1. V = length × width × height = 8 × 5 × 7
  2. = 280 cm3
5.A rectangular prism has a volume of 360 cm3. Its base is 9 cm by 8 cm. Find its height.

Answer: 5 cm

  1. Base area = 9 × 8 = 72 cm2
  2. Height = 360 ÷ 72 = 5 cm
6.A rectangular prism is 13 cm long, 11 cm wide and 5 cm high. Find its volume.

Answer: 715 cm3

  1. V = length × width × height = 13 × 11 × 5
  2. = 715 cm3
7.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 10 cm and height 5 cm. The prism is 9 cm long. Find its volume.

Answer: 225 cm3

  1. Area of the triangle = ½ × 10 × 5 = 25 cm2
  2. V = area of end × length = 25 × 9
  3. = 225 cm3
8.A rectangular prism has a volume of 168 cm3. Its base is 12 cm by 7 cm. Find its height.

Answer: 2 cm

  1. Base area = 12 × 7 = 84 cm2
  2. Height = 168 ÷ 84 = 2 cm
9.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 14 cm and height 8 cm. The prism is 14 cm long. Find its volume.

Answer: 784 cm3

  1. Area of the triangle = ½ × 14 × 8 = 56 cm2
  2. V = area of end × length = 56 × 14
  3. = 784 cm3
10.A rectangular prism is 11 cm long, 12 cm wide and 4 cm high. Find its volume.

Answer: 528 cm3

  1. V = length × width × height = 11 × 12 × 4
  2. = 528 cm3

Marking tips

  • Give credit for correct method even when the final answer slips — the working shows where the thinking went right.
  • For open-ended tasks, use the success criteria as a checklist rather than looking for one "right" answer.
  • Celebrate what went well first, then pick one thing to work on next.
