Year 6 Volume of Prisms and Cylinders Worksheet — Level 2 — Practice Set 3 — Answers
Show your working. Volume is measured in cubic units (cm³).
1.A rectangular prism is 4 cm long, 5 cm wide and 2 cm high. Find its volume.
Answer: 40 cm3
- V = length × width × height = 4 × 5 × 2
- = 40 cm3
2.A rectangular prism is 3 cm long, 6 cm wide and 6 cm high. Find its volume.
Answer: 108 cm3
- V = length × width × height = 3 × 6 × 6
- = 108 cm3
3.A rectangular prism has a volume of 864 cm3. Its base is 12 cm by 8 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 9 cm
- Base area = 12 × 8 = 96 cm2
- Height = 864 ÷ 96 = 9 cm
4.A rectangular prism has a volume of 180 cm3. Its base is 4 cm by 9 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 5 cm
- Base area = 4 × 9 = 36 cm2
- Height = 180 ÷ 36 = 5 cm
5.A rectangular prism has a volume of 648 cm3. Its base is 12 cm by 6 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 9 cm
- Base area = 12 × 6 = 72 cm2
- Height = 648 ÷ 72 = 9 cm
6.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 8 cm and height 10 cm. The prism is 3 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 120 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 8 × 10 = 40 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 40 × 3
- = 120 cm3
7.A rectangular prism is 12 cm long, 5 cm wide and 9 cm high. Find its volume.
Answer: 540 cm3
- V = length × width × height = 12 × 5 × 9
- = 540 cm3
8.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 8 cm and height 3 cm. The prism is 12 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 144 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 8 × 3 = 12 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 12 × 12
- = 144 cm3
9.A rectangular prism is 3 cm long, 12 cm wide and 10 cm high. Find its volume.
Answer: 360 cm3
- V = length × width × height = 3 × 12 × 10
- = 360 cm3
10.A rectangular prism is 7 cm long, 4 cm wide and 8 cm high. Find its volume.
Answer: 224 cm3
- V = length × width × height = 7 × 4 × 8
- = 224 cm3
Marking tips
- Give credit for correct method even when the final answer slips — the working shows where the thinking went right.
- For open-ended tasks, use the success criteria as a checklist rather than looking for one "right" answer.
- Celebrate what went well first, then pick one thing to work on next.
