Year 6 Volume of Prisms and Cylinders Worksheet — Level 2 — Practice Set 4 — Answers
Show your working. Volume is measured in cubic units (cm³).
1.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 18 cm and height 4 cm. The prism is 12 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 432 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 18 × 4 = 36 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 36 × 12
- = 432 cm3
2.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 22 cm and height 4 cm. The prism is 15 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 660 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 22 × 4 = 44 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 44 × 15
- = 660 cm3
3.A rectangular prism has a volume of 495 cm3. Its base is 11 cm by 9 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 5 cm
- Base area = 11 × 9 = 99 cm2
- Height = 495 ÷ 99 = 5 cm
4.A rectangular prism is 6 cm long, 7 cm wide and 8 cm high. Find its volume.
Answer: 336 cm3
- V = length × width × height = 6 × 7 × 8
- = 336 cm3
5.A rectangular prism is 5 cm long, 10 cm wide and 6 cm high. Find its volume.
Answer: 300 cm3
- V = length × width × height = 5 × 10 × 6
- = 300 cm3
6.A rectangular prism has a volume of 512 cm3. Its base is 8 cm by 8 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 8 cm
- Base area = 8 × 8 = 64 cm2
- Height = 512 ÷ 64 = 8 cm
7.A rectangular prism has a volume of 120 cm3. Its base is 3 cm by 10 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 4 cm
- Base area = 3 × 10 = 30 cm2
- Height = 120 ÷ 30 = 4 cm
8.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 22 cm and height 8 cm. The prism is 10 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 880 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 22 × 8 = 88 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 88 × 10
- = 880 cm3
9.A rectangular prism has a volume of 84 cm3. Its base is 4 cm by 7 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 3 cm
- Base area = 4 × 7 = 28 cm2
- Height = 84 ÷ 28 = 3 cm
10.A rectangular prism is 9 cm long, 3 cm wide and 5 cm high. Find its volume.
Answer: 135 cm3
- V = length × width × height = 9 × 3 × 5
- = 135 cm3
Marking tips
- Give credit for correct method even when the final answer slips — the working shows where the thinking went right.
- For open-ended tasks, use the success criteria as a checklist rather than looking for one "right" answer.
- Celebrate what went well first, then pick one thing to work on next.
