Year 7 Coordinates: Quadrants, Midpoints and Distance Worksheet — Level 3 — Answers

Midpoint = (average of the x-values, average of the y-values). Distance: use Pythagoras with the horizontal and vertical changes.

1.Find the midpoint of the segment joining (3, −6) and (9, −1).

Answer: (6, −3.5)

  1. x: (3 + 9) ÷ 2 = 6
  2. y: (−6 + (−1)) ÷ 2 = −3.5
2.Find the midpoint of the segment joining (−3, −1) and (−8, −2).

Answer: (−5.5, −1.5)

  1. x: (−3 + (−8)) ÷ 2 = −5.5
  2. y: (−1 + (−2)) ÷ 2 = −1.5
3.Find the distance between (−2, −6) and (−10, 9).

Answer: 17

  1. Horizontal change = 8, vertical change = 15
  2. d = √(82 + 152) = √289
  3. = 17
4.Find the midpoint of the segment joining (6, 2) and (7, 1).

Answer: (6.5, 1.5)

  1. x: (6 + 7) ÷ 2 = 6.5
  2. y: (2 + 1) ÷ 2 = 1.5
5.Find the midpoint of the segment joining (−8, −6) and (−5, 4).

Answer: (−6.5, −1)

  1. x: (−8 + (−5)) ÷ 2 = −6.5
  2. y: (−6 + 4) ÷ 2 = −1
6.Find the midpoint of the segment joining (−4, 0) and (0, −7).

Answer: (−2, −3.5)

  1. x: (−4 + 0) ÷ 2 = −2
  2. y: (0 + (−7)) ÷ 2 = −3.5
7.Find the distance between (−3, 1) and (−9, 0), correct to 1 decimal place.

Answer: 6.1

  1. Horizontal change = 6, vertical change = 1
  2. d = √(62 + 12) = √37
  3. = 6.1
8.Find the distance between (3, −1) and (6, 3).

Answer: 5

  1. Horizontal change = 3, vertical change = 4
  2. d = √(32 + 42) = √25
  3. = 5
9.Find the midpoint of the segment joining (1, 1) and (0, 9).

Answer: (0.5, 5)

  1. x: (1 + 0) ÷ 2 = 0.5
  2. y: (1 + 9) ÷ 2 = 5
10.Find the distance between (−6, 0) and (−1, 7), correct to 1 decimal place.

Answer: 8.6

  1. Horizontal change = 5, vertical change = 7
  2. d = √(52 + 72) = √74
  3. = 8.6
11.Find the distance between (4, 4) and (1, 0).

Answer: 5

  1. Horizontal change = 3, vertical change = 4
  2. d = √(32 + 42) = √25
  3. = 5
12.Find the distance between (−1, −1) and (−5, −8), correct to 1 decimal place.

Answer: 8.1

  1. Horizontal change = 4, vertical change = 7
  2. d = √(42 + 72) = √65
  3. = 8.1

Marking tips

  • Give credit for correct method even when the final answer slips — the working shows where the thinking went right.
  • For open-ended tasks, use the success criteria as a checklist rather than looking for one "right" answer.
  • Celebrate what went well first, then pick one thing to work on next.
