Year 7 Coordinates: Quadrants, Midpoints and Distance Worksheet — Level 3 — Practice Set 2 — Answers

Midpoint = (average of the x-values, average of the y-values). Distance: use Pythagoras with the horizontal and vertical changes.

1.Find the midpoint of the segment joining (−1, −6) and (3, 1).

Answer: (1, −2.5)

  1. x: (−1 + 3) ÷ 2 = 1
  2. y: (−6 + 1) ÷ 2 = −2.5
2.Find the midpoint of the segment joining (6, 1) and (3, 2).

Answer: (4.5, 1.5)

  1. x: (6 + 3) ÷ 2 = 4.5
  2. y: (1 + 2) ÷ 2 = 1.5
3.Find the midpoint of the segment joining (−3, −4) and (−5, −8).

Answer: (−4, −6)

  1. x: (−3 + (−5)) ÷ 2 = −4
  2. y: (−4 + (−8)) ÷ 2 = −6
4.Find the distance between (1, 3) and (−2, 5), correct to 1 decimal place.

Answer: 3.6

  1. Horizontal change = 3, vertical change = 2
  2. d = √(32 + 22) = √13
  3. = 3.6
5.Find the distance between (3, 1) and (12, −11).

Answer: 15

  1. Horizontal change = 9, vertical change = 12
  2. d = √(92 + 122) = √225
  3. = 15
6.Find the distance between (−3, 1) and (−11, −14).

Answer: 17

  1. Horizontal change = 8, vertical change = 15
  2. d = √(82 + 152) = √289
  3. = 17
7.Find the distance between (−2, 1) and (−8, −7).

Answer: 10

  1. Horizontal change = 6, vertical change = 8
  2. d = √(62 + 82) = √100
  3. = 10
8.Find the midpoint of the segment joining (−1, 6) and (7, −6).

Answer: (3, 0)

  1. x: (−1 + 7) ÷ 2 = 3
  2. y: (6 + (−6)) ÷ 2 = 0
9.Find the distance between (1, 4) and (−4, −8).

Answer: 13

  1. Horizontal change = 5, vertical change = 12
  2. d = √(52 + 122) = √169
  3. = 13
10.Find the distance between (−2, 4) and (−3, 13), correct to 1 decimal place.

Answer: 9.1

  1. Horizontal change = 1, vertical change = 9
  2. d = √(12 + 92) = √82
  3. = 9.1
11.Find the distance between (2, −3) and (6, −5), correct to 1 decimal place.

Answer: 4.5

  1. Horizontal change = 4, vertical change = 2
  2. d = √(42 + 22) = √20
  3. = 4.5
12.Find the distance between (2, 4) and (−6, 9), correct to 1 decimal place.

Answer: 9.4

  1. Horizontal change = 8, vertical change = 5
  2. d = √(82 + 52) = √89
  3. = 9.4

Marking tips

  • Give credit for correct method even when the final answer slips — the working shows where the thinking went right.
  • For open-ended tasks, use the success criteria as a checklist rather than looking for one "right" answer.
  • Celebrate what went well first, then pick one thing to work on next.
