Year 7 Volume of Prisms and Cylinders Worksheet — Level 2 — Practice Set 2 — Answers
Show your working. Volume is measured in cubic units (cm³).
1.A rectangular prism has a volume of 162 cm3. Its base is 6 cm by 3 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 9 cm
- Base area = 6 × 3 = 18 cm2
- Height = 162 ÷ 18 = 9 cm
2.A rectangular prism has a volume of 144 cm3. Its base is 8 cm by 9 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 2 cm
- Base area = 8 × 9 = 72 cm2
- Height = 144 ÷ 72 = 2 cm
3.A rectangular prism has a volume of 392 cm3. Its base is 8 cm by 7 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 7 cm
- Base area = 8 × 7 = 56 cm2
- Height = 392 ÷ 56 = 7 cm
4.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 10 cm and height 10 cm. The prism is 5 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 250 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 10 × 10 = 50 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 50 × 5
- = 250 cm3
5.A rectangular prism is 12 cm long, 3 cm wide and 9 cm high. Find its volume.
Answer: 324 cm3
- V = length × width × height = 12 × 3 × 9
- = 324 cm3
6.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 8 cm and height 10 cm. The prism is 11 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 440 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 8 × 10 = 40 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 40 × 11
- = 440 cm3
7.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 24 cm and height 4 cm. The prism is 9 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 432 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 24 × 4 = 48 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 48 × 9
- = 432 cm3
8.A rectangular prism is 4 cm long, 9 cm wide and 9 cm high. Find its volume.
Answer: 324 cm3
- V = length × width × height = 4 × 9 × 9
- = 324 cm3
9.A rectangular prism is 6 cm long, 5 cm wide and 2 cm high. Find its volume.
Answer: 60 cm3
- V = length × width × height = 6 × 5 × 2
- = 60 cm3
10.A rectangular prism is 2 cm long, 7 cm wide and 5 cm high. Find its volume.
Answer: 70 cm3
- V = length × width × height = 2 × 7 × 5
- = 70 cm3
Marking tips
- Give credit for correct method even when the final answer slips — the working shows where the thinking went right.
- For open-ended tasks, use the success criteria as a checklist rather than looking for one "right" answer.
- Celebrate what went well first, then pick one thing to work on next.
