Year 7 Volume of Prisms and Cylinders Worksheet — Level 2 — Practice Set 4 — Answers

Show your working. Volume is measured in cubic units (cm³).

1.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 12 cm and height 6 cm. The prism is 11 cm long. Find its volume.

Answer: 396 cm3

  1. Area of the triangle = ½ × 12 × 6 = 36 cm2
  2. V = area of end × length = 36 × 11
  3. = 396 cm3
2.A rectangular prism is 8 cm long, 6 cm wide and 3 cm high. Find its volume.

Answer: 144 cm3

  1. V = length × width × height = 8 × 6 × 3
  2. = 144 cm3
3.A rectangular prism has a volume of 120 cm3. Its base is 5 cm by 8 cm. Find its height.

Answer: 3 cm

  1. Base area = 5 × 8 = 40 cm2
  2. Height = 120 ÷ 40 = 3 cm
4.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 6 cm and height 8 cm. The prism is 9 cm long. Find its volume.

Answer: 216 cm3

  1. Area of the triangle = ½ × 6 × 8 = 24 cm2
  2. V = area of end × length = 24 × 9
  3. = 216 cm3
5.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 22 cm and height 3 cm. The prism is 5 cm long. Find its volume.

Answer: 165 cm3

  1. Area of the triangle = ½ × 22 × 3 = 33 cm2
  2. V = area of end × length = 33 × 5
  3. = 165 cm3
6.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 16 cm and height 8 cm. The prism is 6 cm long. Find its volume.

Answer: 384 cm3

  1. Area of the triangle = ½ × 16 × 8 = 64 cm2
  2. V = area of end × length = 64 × 6
  3. = 384 cm3
7.A rectangular prism has a volume of 72 cm3. Its base is 6 cm by 2 cm. Find its height.

Answer: 6 cm

  1. Base area = 6 × 2 = 12 cm2
  2. Height = 72 ÷ 12 = 6 cm
8.A rectangular prism has a volume of 440 cm3. Its base is 11 cm by 5 cm. Find its height.

Answer: 8 cm

  1. Base area = 11 × 5 = 55 cm2
  2. Height = 440 ÷ 55 = 8 cm
9.A rectangular prism is 2 cm long, 12 cm wide and 10 cm high. Find its volume.

Answer: 240 cm3

  1. V = length × width × height = 2 × 12 × 10
  2. = 240 cm3
10.A rectangular prism has a volume of 42 cm3. Its base is 3 cm by 2 cm. Find its height.

Answer: 7 cm

  1. Base area = 3 × 2 = 6 cm2
  2. Height = 42 ÷ 6 = 7 cm

Marking tips

  • Give credit for correct method even when the final answer slips — the working shows where the thinking went right.
  • For open-ended tasks, use the success criteria as a checklist rather than looking for one "right" answer.
  • Celebrate what went well first, then pick one thing to work on next.
