Year 8 Coordinates: Quadrants, Midpoints and Distance Worksheet — Level 3 — Answers

Midpoint = (average of the x-values, average of the y-values). Distance: use Pythagoras with the horizontal and vertical changes.

1.Find the midpoint of the segment joining (−5, 2) and (9, 2).

Answer: (2, 2)

  1. x: (−5 + 9) ÷ 2 = 2
  2. y: (2 + 2) ÷ 2 = 2
2.Find the midpoint of the segment joining (−9, −8) and (1, −1).

Answer: (−4, −4.5)

  1. x: (−9 + 1) ÷ 2 = −4
  2. y: (−8 + (−1)) ÷ 2 = −4.5
3.Find the midpoint of the segment joining (4, 4) and (−5, −2).

Answer: (−0.5, 1)

  1. x: (4 + (−5)) ÷ 2 = −0.5
  2. y: (4 + (−2)) ÷ 2 = 1
4.Find the distance between (−1, 0) and (1, −6), correct to 1 decimal place.

Answer: 6.3

  1. Horizontal change = 2, vertical change = 6
  2. d = √(22 + 62) = √40
  3. = 6.3
5.Find the midpoint of the segment joining (−2, −5) and (−8, 6).

Answer: (−5, 0.5)

  1. x: (−2 + (−8)) ÷ 2 = −5
  2. y: (−5 + 6) ÷ 2 = 0.5
6.Find the distance between (3, −4) and (8, −16).

Answer: 13

  1. Horizontal change = 5, vertical change = 12
  2. d = √(52 + 122) = √169
  3. = 13
7.Find the distance between (−2, −4) and (1, −6), correct to 1 decimal place.

Answer: 3.6

  1. Horizontal change = 3, vertical change = 2
  2. d = √(32 + 22) = √13
  3. = 3.6
8.Find the midpoint of the segment joining (−3, −7) and (−3, 9).

Answer: (−3, 1)

  1. x: (−3 + (−3)) ÷ 2 = −3
  2. y: (−7 + 9) ÷ 2 = 1
9.Find the distance between (4, −1) and (1, −7), correct to 1 decimal place.

Answer: 6.7

  1. Horizontal change = 3, vertical change = 6
  2. d = √(32 + 62) = √45
  3. = 6.7
10.Find the midpoint of the segment joining (−4, −8) and (−4, −9).

Answer: (−4, −8.5)

  1. x: (−4 + (−4)) ÷ 2 = −4
  2. y: (−8 + (−9)) ÷ 2 = −8.5
11.Find the midpoint of the segment joining (−8, 4) and (−9, −4).

Answer: (−8.5, 0)

  1. x: (−8 + (−9)) ÷ 2 = −8.5
  2. y: (4 + (−4)) ÷ 2 = 0
12.Find the midpoint of the segment joining (8, 8) and (6, 8).

Answer: (7, 8)

  1. x: (8 + 6) ÷ 2 = 7
  2. y: (8 + 8) ÷ 2 = 8

Marking tips

  • Give credit for correct method even when the final answer slips — the working shows where the thinking went right.
  • For open-ended tasks, use the success criteria as a checklist rather than looking for one "right" answer.
  • Celebrate what went well first, then pick one thing to work on next.
