Year 8 Volume of Prisms and Cylinders Worksheet — Level 2 — Answers
Show your working. Volume is measured in cubic units (cm³).
1.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 22 cm and height 3 cm. The prism is 12 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 396 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 22 × 3 = 33 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 33 × 12
- = 396 cm3
2.A rectangular prism is 14 cm long, 9 cm wide and 4 cm high. Find its volume.
Answer: 504 cm3
- V = length × width × height = 14 × 9 × 4
- = 504 cm3
3.A rectangular prism has a volume of 189 cm3. Its base is 7 cm by 9 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 3 cm
- Base area = 7 × 9 = 63 cm2
- Height = 189 ÷ 63 = 3 cm
4.A rectangular prism has a volume of 512 cm3. Its base is 8 cm by 8 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 8 cm
- Base area = 8 × 8 = 64 cm2
- Height = 512 ÷ 64 = 8 cm
5.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 14 cm and height 5 cm. The prism is 5 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 175 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 14 × 5 = 35 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 35 × 5
- = 175 cm3
6.A rectangular prism has a volume of 108 cm3. Its base is 3 cm by 6 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 6 cm
- Base area = 3 × 6 = 18 cm2
- Height = 108 ÷ 18 = 6 cm
7.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 20 cm and height 9 cm. The prism is 5 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 450 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 20 × 9 = 90 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 90 × 5
- = 450 cm3
8.A rectangular prism has a volume of 30 cm3. Its base is 3 cm by 2 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 5 cm
- Base area = 3 × 2 = 6 cm2
- Height = 30 ÷ 6 = 5 cm
9.A rectangular prism is 14 cm long, 8 cm wide and 4 cm high. Find its volume.
Answer: 448 cm3
- V = length × width × height = 14 × 8 × 4
- = 448 cm3
10.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 20 cm and height 3 cm. The prism is 12 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 360 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 20 × 3 = 30 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 30 × 12
- = 360 cm3
Marking tips
- Give credit for correct method even when the final answer slips — the working shows where the thinking went right.
- For open-ended tasks, use the success criteria as a checklist rather than looking for one "right" answer.
- Celebrate what went well first, then pick one thing to work on next.
