Year 8 Volume of Prisms and Cylinders Worksheet — Level 2 — Practice Set 2 — Answers
Show your working. Volume is measured in cubic units (cm³).
1.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 20 cm and height 3 cm. The prism is 10 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 300 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 20 × 3 = 30 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 30 × 10
- = 300 cm3
2.A rectangular prism is 12 cm long, 5 cm wide and 4 cm high. Find its volume.
Answer: 240 cm3
- V = length × width × height = 12 × 5 × 4
- = 240 cm3
3.A rectangular prism has a volume of 280 cm3. Its base is 7 cm by 10 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 4 cm
- Base area = 7 × 10 = 70 cm2
- Height = 280 ÷ 70 = 4 cm
4.A rectangular prism has a volume of 42 cm3. Its base is 3 cm by 7 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 2 cm
- Base area = 3 × 7 = 21 cm2
- Height = 42 ÷ 21 = 2 cm
5.A rectangular prism has a volume of 192 cm3. Its base is 8 cm by 6 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 4 cm
- Base area = 8 × 6 = 48 cm2
- Height = 192 ÷ 48 = 4 cm
6.A rectangular prism has a volume of 672 cm3. Its base is 12 cm by 7 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 8 cm
- Base area = 12 × 7 = 84 cm2
- Height = 672 ÷ 84 = 8 cm
7.A rectangular prism has a volume of 315 cm3. Its base is 5 cm by 7 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 9 cm
- Base area = 5 × 7 = 35 cm2
- Height = 315 ÷ 35 = 9 cm
8.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 16 cm and height 10 cm. The prism is 15 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 1,200 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 16 × 10 = 80 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 80 × 15
- = 1,200 cm3
9.A rectangular prism has a volume of 224 cm3. Its base is 8 cm by 4 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 7 cm
- Base area = 8 × 4 = 32 cm2
- Height = 224 ÷ 32 = 7 cm
10.A rectangular prism has a volume of 280 cm3. Its base is 5 cm by 7 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 8 cm
- Base area = 5 × 7 = 35 cm2
- Height = 280 ÷ 35 = 8 cm
Marking tips
- Give credit for correct method even when the final answer slips — the working shows where the thinking went right.
- For open-ended tasks, use the success criteria as a checklist rather than looking for one "right" answer.
- Celebrate what went well first, then pick one thing to work on next.
