Year 8 Volume of Prisms and Cylinders Worksheet — Level 2 — Practice Set 3 — Answers
Show your working. Volume is measured in cubic units (cm³).
1.A rectangular prism has a volume of 648 cm3. Its base is 9 cm by 8 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 9 cm
- Base area = 9 × 8 = 72 cm2
- Height = 648 ÷ 72 = 9 cm
2.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 16 cm and height 4 cm. The prism is 13 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 416 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 16 × 4 = 32 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 32 × 13
- = 416 cm3
3.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 20 cm and height 7 cm. The prism is 4 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 280 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 20 × 7 = 70 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 70 × 4
- = 280 cm3
4.A rectangular prism is 10 cm long, 6 cm wide and 3 cm high. Find its volume.
Answer: 180 cm3
- V = length × width × height = 10 × 6 × 3
- = 180 cm3
5.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 14 cm and height 6 cm. The prism is 15 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 630 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 14 × 6 = 42 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 42 × 15
- = 630 cm3
6.A rectangular prism has a volume of 450 cm3. Its base is 9 cm by 10 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 5 cm
- Base area = 9 × 10 = 90 cm2
- Height = 450 ÷ 90 = 5 cm
7.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 20 cm and height 4 cm. The prism is 6 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 240 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 20 × 4 = 40 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 40 × 6
- = 240 cm3
8.A rectangular prism has a volume of 560 cm3. Its base is 10 cm by 8 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 7 cm
- Base area = 10 × 8 = 80 cm2
- Height = 560 ÷ 80 = 7 cm
9.A rectangular prism is 13 cm long, 8 cm wide and 5 cm high. Find its volume.
Answer: 520 cm3
- V = length × width × height = 13 × 8 × 5
- = 520 cm3
10.A rectangular prism is 4 cm long, 12 cm wide and 7 cm high. Find its volume.
Answer: 336 cm3
- V = length × width × height = 4 × 12 × 7
- = 336 cm3
Marking tips
- Give credit for correct method even when the final answer slips — the working shows where the thinking went right.
- For open-ended tasks, use the success criteria as a checklist rather than looking for one "right" answer.
- Celebrate what went well first, then pick one thing to work on next.
