Year 8 Volume of Prisms and Cylinders Worksheet — Level 2 — Practice Set 4 — Answers
Show your working. Volume is measured in cubic units (cm³).
1.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 12 cm and height 4 cm. The prism is 7 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 168 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 12 × 4 = 24 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 24 × 7
- = 168 cm3
2.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 12 cm and height 10 cm. The prism is 8 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 480 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 12 × 10 = 60 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 60 × 8
- = 480 cm3
3.A rectangular prism has a volume of 196 cm3. Its base is 7 cm by 4 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 7 cm
- Base area = 7 × 4 = 28 cm2
- Height = 196 ÷ 28 = 7 cm
4.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 24 cm and height 7 cm. The prism is 3 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 252 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 24 × 7 = 84 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 84 × 3
- = 252 cm3
5.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 18 cm and height 4 cm. The prism is 5 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 180 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 18 × 4 = 36 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 36 × 5
- = 180 cm3
6.A rectangular prism is 15 cm long, 6 cm wide and 2 cm high. Find its volume.
Answer: 180 cm3
- V = length × width × height = 15 × 6 × 2
- = 180 cm3
7.A rectangular prism has a volume of 24 cm3. Its base is 6 cm by 2 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 2 cm
- Base area = 6 × 2 = 12 cm2
- Height = 24 ÷ 12 = 2 cm
8.A rectangular prism has a volume of 162 cm3. Its base is 3 cm by 6 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 9 cm
- Base area = 3 × 6 = 18 cm2
- Height = 162 ÷ 18 = 9 cm
9.A rectangular prism is 11 cm long, 11 cm wide and 9 cm high. Find its volume.
Answer: 1,089 cm3
- V = length × width × height = 11 × 11 × 9
- = 1,089 cm3
10.A rectangular prism has a volume of 84 cm3. Its base is 4 cm by 3 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 7 cm
- Base area = 4 × 3 = 12 cm2
- Height = 84 ÷ 12 = 7 cm
Marking tips
- Give credit for correct method even when the final answer slips — the working shows where the thinking went right.
- For open-ended tasks, use the success criteria as a checklist rather than looking for one "right" answer.
- Celebrate what went well first, then pick one thing to work on next.
