Year 9 Gradient and Linear Equations Worksheet — Level 2 — Practice Set 2 — Answers
Show your working. Gradient = rise ÷ run; the equation of a line can be written as y = (gradient)x + (y-intercept).
1.Find the gradient of the line through (0, −6) and (−5, −1).
Answer: −1
- gradient = rise ÷ run = (−1 − (−6)) ÷ (−5 − 0)
- = 5 ÷ −5 = −1
2.A line has a gradient of 2 and passes through (3, 2). Find its equation.
Answer: y = 2x − 4
- y = 2x + (y-intercept)
- 2 = 2 × 3 + (y-intercept)
- y-intercept = 2 − 6 = −4
- y = 2x − 4
3.Find the gradient of the line through (−1, −4) and (−2, −8).
Answer: 4
- gradient = rise ÷ run = (−8 − (−4)) ÷ (−2 − (−1))
- = −4 ÷ −1 = 4
4.A line has a gradient of −3 and passes through (−1, 1). Find its equation.
Answer: y = −3x − 2
- y = −3x + (y-intercept)
- 1 = −3 × (−1) + (y-intercept)
- y-intercept = 1 − 3 = −2
- y = −3x − 2
5.Find the gradient of the line through (5, −2) and (9, 4).
Answer:
- gradient = rise ÷ run = (4 − (−2)) ÷ (9 − 5)
- = 6 ÷ 4 =
6.A line has a gradient of 5 and passes through (0, −2). Find its equation.
Answer: y = 5x − 2
- y = 5x + (y-intercept)
- −2 = 5 × 0 + (y-intercept)
- y-intercept = −2 − 0 = −2
- y = 5x − 2
7.Find the gradient of the line through (−6, −5) and (−11, −2).
Answer: −
- gradient = rise ÷ run = (−2 − (−5)) ÷ (−11 − (−6))
- = 3 ÷ −5 = −
8.Find the gradient of the line through (6, 6) and (8, 10).
Answer: 2
- gradient = rise ÷ run = (10 − 6) ÷ (8 − 6)
- = 4 ÷ 2 = 2
9.Find the gradient of the line through (3, −1) and (7, 6).
Answer:
- gradient = rise ÷ run = (6 − (−1)) ÷ (7 − 3)
- = 7 ÷ 4 =
10.A line has a gradient of −5 and passes through (4, −13). Find its equation.
Answer: y = −5x + 7
- y = −5x + (y-intercept)
- −13 = −5 × 4 + (y-intercept)
- y-intercept = −13 − (−20) = 7
- y = −5x + 7
Marking tips
- Give credit for correct method even when the final answer slips — the working shows where the thinking went right.
- For open-ended tasks, use the success criteria as a checklist rather than looking for one "right" answer.
- Celebrate what went well first, then pick one thing to work on next.
