Year 9 Volume of Prisms and Cylinders Worksheet — Level 2 — Answers
Show your working. Volume is measured in cubic units (cm³).
1.A rectangular prism is 14 cm long, 8 cm wide and 8 cm high. Find its volume.
Answer: 896 cm3
- V = length × width × height = 14 × 8 × 8
- = 896 cm3
2.A rectangular prism has a volume of 240 cm3. Its base is 6 cm by 5 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 8 cm
- Base area = 6 × 5 = 30 cm2
- Height = 240 ÷ 30 = 8 cm
3.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 4 cm and height 10 cm. The prism is 7 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 140 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 4 × 10 = 20 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 20 × 7
- = 140 cm3
4.A rectangular prism has a volume of 56 cm3. Its base is 7 cm by 4 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 2 cm
- Base area = 7 × 4 = 28 cm2
- Height = 56 ÷ 28 = 2 cm
5.A rectangular prism has a volume of 250 cm3. Its base is 5 cm by 10 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 5 cm
- Base area = 5 × 10 = 50 cm2
- Height = 250 ÷ 50 = 5 cm
6.A rectangular prism is 2 cm long, 4 cm wide and 5 cm high. Find its volume.
Answer: 40 cm3
- V = length × width × height = 2 × 4 × 5
- = 40 cm3
7.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 18 cm and height 2 cm. The prism is 8 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 144 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 18 × 2 = 18 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 18 × 8
- = 144 cm3
8.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 20 cm and height 3 cm. The prism is 3 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 90 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 20 × 3 = 30 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 30 × 3
- = 90 cm3
9.A rectangular prism has a volume of 135 cm3. Its base is 3 cm by 5 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 9 cm
- Base area = 3 × 5 = 15 cm2
- Height = 135 ÷ 15 = 9 cm
10.A rectangular prism is 11 cm long, 7 cm wide and 7 cm high. Find its volume.
Answer: 539 cm3
- V = length × width × height = 11 × 7 × 7
- = 539 cm3
Marking tips
- Give credit for correct method even when the final answer slips — the working shows where the thinking went right.
- For open-ended tasks, use the success criteria as a checklist rather than looking for one "right" answer.
- Celebrate what went well first, then pick one thing to work on next.
