Year 9 Volume of Prisms and Cylinders Worksheet — Level 2 — Practice Set 2 — Answers

Show your working. Volume is measured in cubic units (cm³).

1.A rectangular prism has a volume of 192 cm3. Its base is 8 cm by 4 cm. Find its height.

Answer: 6 cm

  1. Base area = 8 × 4 = 32 cm2
  2. Height = 192 ÷ 32 = 6 cm
2.A rectangular prism has a volume of 150 cm3. Its base is 5 cm by 6 cm. Find its height.

Answer: 5 cm

  1. Base area = 5 × 6 = 30 cm2
  2. Height = 150 ÷ 30 = 5 cm
3.A rectangular prism has a volume of 72 cm3. Its base is 4 cm by 2 cm. Find its height.

Answer: 9 cm

  1. Base area = 4 × 2 = 8 cm2
  2. Height = 72 ÷ 8 = 9 cm
4.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 20 cm and height 10 cm. The prism is 11 cm long. Find its volume.

Answer: 1,100 cm3

  1. Area of the triangle = ½ × 20 × 10 = 100 cm2
  2. V = area of end × length = 100 × 11
  3. = 1,100 cm3
5.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 24 cm and height 3 cm. The prism is 6 cm long. Find its volume.

Answer: 216 cm3

  1. Area of the triangle = ½ × 24 × 3 = 36 cm2
  2. V = area of end × length = 36 × 6
  3. = 216 cm3
6.A rectangular prism has a volume of 96 cm3. Its base is 8 cm by 2 cm. Find its height.

Answer: 6 cm

  1. Base area = 8 × 2 = 16 cm2
  2. Height = 96 ÷ 16 = 6 cm
7.A rectangular prism has a volume of 315 cm3. Its base is 5 cm by 9 cm. Find its height.

Answer: 7 cm

  1. Base area = 5 × 9 = 45 cm2
  2. Height = 315 ÷ 45 = 7 cm
8.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 4 cm and height 2 cm. The prism is 8 cm long. Find its volume.

Answer: 32 cm3

  1. Area of the triangle = ½ × 4 × 2 = 4 cm2
  2. V = area of end × length = 4 × 8
  3. = 32 cm3
9.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 6 cm and height 4 cm. The prism is 15 cm long. Find its volume.

Answer: 180 cm3

  1. Area of the triangle = ½ × 6 × 4 = 12 cm2
  2. V = area of end × length = 12 × 15
  3. = 180 cm3
10.A rectangular prism is 10 cm long, 3 cm wide and 9 cm high. Find its volume.

Answer: 270 cm3

  1. V = length × width × height = 10 × 3 × 9
  2. = 270 cm3

Marking tips

  • Give credit for correct method even when the final answer slips — the working shows where the thinking went right.
  • For open-ended tasks, use the success criteria as a checklist rather than looking for one "right" answer.
  • Celebrate what went well first, then pick one thing to work on next.
