10th Grade Coordinates: Quadrants, Midpoints and Distance Worksheet — Level 3 — Practice Set 4 — Answers
Midpoint = (average of the x-values, average of the y-values). Distance: use Pythagoras with the horizontal and vertical changes.
1.Find the midpoint of the segment joining (7, 8) and (7, −3).
Answer: (7, 2.5)
- x: (7 + 7) ÷ 2 = 7
- y: (8 + (−3)) ÷ 2 = 2.5
2.Find the midpoint of the segment joining (−8, 4) and (−2, 1).
Answer: (−5, 2.5)
- x: (−8 + (−2)) ÷ 2 = −5
- y: (4 + 1) ÷ 2 = 2.5
3.Find the midpoint of the segment joining (9, 7) and (−8, −6).
Answer: (0.5, 0.5)
- x: (9 + (−8)) ÷ 2 = 0.5
- y: (7 + (−6)) ÷ 2 = 0.5
4.Find the midpoint of the segment joining (2, −4) and (5, −2).
Answer: (3.5, −3)
- x: (2 + 5) ÷ 2 = 3.5
- y: (−4 + (−2)) ÷ 2 = −3
5.Find the distance between (4, −4) and (12, −19).
Answer: 17
- Horizontal change = 8, vertical change = 15
- d = √(82 + 152) = √289
- = 17
6.Find the midpoint of the segment joining (4, 7) and (4, −6).
Answer: (4, 0.5)
- x: (4 + 4) ÷ 2 = 4
- y: (7 + (−6)) ÷ 2 = 0.5
7.Find the midpoint of the segment joining (−3, 0) and (−1, −4).
Answer: (−2, −2)
- x: (−3 + (−1)) ÷ 2 = −2
- y: (0 + (−4)) ÷ 2 = −2
8.Find the distance between (0, 1) and (−8, −14).
Answer: 17
- Horizontal change = 8, vertical change = 15
- d = √(82 + 152) = √289
- = 17
9.Find the midpoint of the segment joining (1, 8) and (−1, −5).
Answer: (0, 1.5)
- x: (1 + (−1)) ÷ 2 = 0
- y: (8 + (−5)) ÷ 2 = 1.5
10.Find the midpoint of the segment joining (−4, 6) and (−2, 5).
Answer: (−3, 5.5)
- x: (−4 + (−2)) ÷ 2 = −3
- y: (6 + 5) ÷ 2 = 5.5
11.Find the distance between (−1, −3) and (0, −12), correct to 1 decimal place.
Answer: 9.1
- Horizontal change = 1, vertical change = 9
- d = √(12 + 92) = √82
- = 9.1
12.Find the midpoint of the segment joining (8, 9) and (7, −5).
Answer: (7.5, 2)
- x: (8 + 7) ÷ 2 = 7.5
- y: (9 + (−5)) ÷ 2 = 2
Marking tips
- Give credit for correct method even when the final answer slips — the working shows where the thinking went right.
- For open-ended tasks, use the success criteria as a checklist rather than looking for one "right" answer.
- Celebrate what went well first, then pick one thing to work on next.
