Always include units: °C, mm or km/h.

Part A: Weather instruments

Read the passage. Then circle the best answer.

Meteorologists are scientists who study the weather. They use instruments to measure it accurately, rather than just guessing.

A thermometer measures air temperature in degrees Celsius (°C). It is kept in the shade, about a meter or more above the ground.

A rain gauge collects rain in a container with a scale. Rainfall is measured in millimeters (mm). It should be in an open space, away from trees and roofs.

A wind vane shows the direction the wind is blowing from (north, south, east or west). An anemometer has spinning cups that measure wind speed, often in kilometers per hour (km/h).

By measuring at the same time each day and recording results in a table, we can find patterns and make better forecasts.

1.Which instrument measures how much rain has fallen?
  1. Aa thermometer
  2. Ba rain gauge
  3. Ca wind vane
  4. Dan anemometer
2.What does a wind vane show?
  1. Athe wind's speed
  2. Bthe direction the wind is coming from
  3. Cthe temperature
  4. Dthe amount of cloud
3.Which instrument has spinning cups to measure wind speed?
  1. Aan anemometer
  2. Ba rain gauge
  3. Ca thermometer
  4. Da compass
4.Rainfall is usually measured in…
  1. Adegrees Celsius
  2. Bkilograms
  3. Cmillimeters
  4. Dliters per hour
5.Why should a thermometer for weather be kept in the shade?
  1. Aso it does not get wet
  2. Bso direct sunlight does not heat it and give a reading that is too high
  3. Cso birds cannot see it
  4. Dso it reads faster

Part B: Match and explain

6.Match each instrument to what it measures.
  • thermometer
  • rain gauge
  • wind vane
  • anemometer
  • wind direction
  • wind speed
  • temperature
  • rainfall
7.Scientists who study and forecast the weather are called (answer space).
8.Why should a rain gauge be placed away from trees and buildings? (answer space)

Part C: True or false?

Write True or False.

9.A wind vane points to the direction the wind is blowing from. ☐ True   ☐ False
10.You should measure the weather at a different time each day. ☐ True   ☐ False
11.10 mm of rain is more rain than 4 mm. ☐ True   ☐ False
