1.A number line goes from 700 to 900 and is split into 4 equal spaces. The arrow is 1 space along from 700. What number does the arrow point to?
Answer: 750
- Each space is (900 − 700) ÷ 4 = 50
- 700 + 1 × 50 = 750
2.A number line goes from 0 to 80 and is split into 4 equal spaces. The arrow is 2 spaces along from 0. What number does the arrow point to?
Answer: 40
- Each space is (80 − 0) ÷ 4 = 20
- 0 + 2 × 20 = 40
3.What number is halfway between 40 and 120?
Answer: 80
- 120 − 40 = 80; half of that is 40
- 40 + 40 = 80
4.A number line goes from 900 to 1,000 and is split into 5 equal spaces. The arrow is 1 space along from 900. What number does the arrow point to?
Answer: 920
- Each space is (1,000 − 900) ÷ 5 = 20
- 900 + 1 × 20 = 920
5.A number line goes from 600 to 1,100 and is split into 10 equal spaces. The arrow is 7 spaces along from 600. What number does the arrow point to?
Answer: 950
- Each space is (1,100 − 600) ÷ 10 = 50
- 600 + 7 × 50 = 950
6.What number is halfway between 190 and 610?
Answer: 400
- 610 − 190 = 420; half of that is 210
- 190 + 210 = 400
7.A number line goes from 600 to 800 and is split into 4 equal spaces. The arrow is 1 space along from 600. What number does the arrow point to?
Answer: 650
- Each space is (800 − 600) ÷ 4 = 50
- 600 + 1 × 50 = 650
8.A number line goes from 0 to 250 and is split into 10 equal spaces. The arrow is 9 spaces along from 0. What number does the arrow point to?
Answer: 225
- Each space is (250 − 0) ÷ 10 = 25
- 0 + 9 × 25 = 225
9.What number is halfway between 300 and 840?
Answer: 570
- 840 − 300 = 540; half of that is 270
- 300 + 270 = 570

Marking tips
- Give credit for correct method even when the final answer slips — the working shows where the thinking went right.
- For open-ended tasks, use the success criteria as a checklist rather than looking for one "right" answer.
- Celebrate what went well first, then pick one thing to work on next.
