1.A cylinder has a radius of 9 cm and a height of 3 cm. Find its volume, correct to 1 decimal place.

Answer: 763.4 cm3

  1. V = π × r2 × h = π × 92 × 3
  2. = π × 243
  3. ≈ 763.4 cm3
2.A rectangular prism has a volume of 50 cm3. Its base is 5 cm by 2 cm. Find its height.

Answer: 5 cm

  1. Base area = 5 × 2 = 10 cm2
  2. Height = 50 ÷ 10 = 5 cm
3.A rectangular prism has a volume of 198 cm3. Its base is 11 cm by 2 cm. Find its height.

Answer: 9 cm

  1. Base area = 11 × 2 = 22 cm2
  2. Height = 198 ÷ 22 = 9 cm
4.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 22 cm and height 3 cm. The prism is 7 cm long. Find its volume.

Answer: 231 cm3

  1. Area of the triangle = ½ × 22 × 3 = 33 cm2
  2. V = area of end × length = 33 × 7
  3. = 231 cm3
5.A cylinder has a radius of 2 cm and a height of 20 cm. Find its volume, correct to 1 decimal place.

Answer: 251.3 cm3

  1. V = π × r2 × h = π × 22 × 20
  2. = π × 80
  3. ≈ 251.3 cm3
6.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 12 cm and height 2 cm. The prism is 3 cm long. Find its volume.

Answer: 36 cm3

  1. Area of the triangle = ½ × 12 × 2 = 12 cm2
  2. V = area of end × length = 12 × 3
  3. = 36 cm3
7.A rectangular prism has a volume of 198 cm3. Its base is 11 cm by 9 cm. Find its height.

Answer: 2 cm

  1. Base area = 11 × 9 = 99 cm2
  2. Height = 198 ÷ 99 = 2 cm
8.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 20 cm and height 4 cm. The prism is 12 cm long. Find its volume.

Answer: 480 cm3

  1. Area of the triangle = ½ × 20 × 4 = 40 cm2
  2. V = area of end × length = 40 × 12
  3. = 480 cm3
9.A rectangular prism has a volume of 400 cm3. Its base is 5 cm by 10 cm. Find its height.

Answer: 8 cm

  1. Base area = 5 × 10 = 50 cm2
  2. Height = 400 ÷ 50 = 8 cm
10.A rectangular prism has a volume of 96 cm3. Its base is 4 cm by 6 cm. Find its height.

Answer: 4 cm

  1. Base area = 4 × 6 = 24 cm2
  2. Height = 96 ÷ 24 = 4 cm

Marking tips

  • Give credit for correct method even when the final answer slips — the working shows where the thinking went right.
  • For open-ended tasks, use the success criteria as a checklist rather than looking for one "right" answer.
  • Celebrate what went well first, then pick one thing to work on next.
