5th Grade Volume of Prisms and Cylinders Worksheet — Level 2 — Practice Set 2 — Answers
Show your work. Volume is measured in cubic units (cm³).
1.A rectangular prism is 9 cm long, 9 cm wide and 4 cm high. Find its volume.
Answer: 324 cm3
- V = length × width × height = 9 × 9 × 4
- = 324 cm3
2.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 12 cm and height 3 cm. The prism is 12 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 216 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 12 × 3 = 18 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 18 × 12
- = 216 cm3
3.A rectangular prism is 5 cm long, 6 cm wide and 4 cm high. Find its volume.
Answer: 120 cm3
- V = length × width × height = 5 × 6 × 4
- = 120 cm3
4.A rectangular prism is 15 cm long, 10 cm wide and 5 cm high. Find its volume.
Answer: 750 cm3
- V = length × width × height = 15 × 10 × 5
- = 750 cm3
5.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 6 cm and height 6 cm. The prism is 12 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 216 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 6 × 6 = 18 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 18 × 12
- = 216 cm3
6.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 6 cm and height 8 cm. The prism is 7 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 168 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 6 × 8 = 24 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 24 × 7
- = 168 cm3
7.A rectangular prism has a volume of 99 cm3. Its base is 11 cm by 3 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 3 cm
- Base area = 11 × 3 = 33 cm2
- Height = 99 ÷ 33 = 3 cm
8.A rectangular prism is 9 cm long, 4 cm wide and 8 cm high. Find its volume.
Answer: 288 cm3
- V = length × width × height = 9 × 4 × 8
- = 288 cm3
9.A rectangular prism is 10 cm long, 11 cm wide and 5 cm high. Find its volume.
Answer: 550 cm3
- V = length × width × height = 10 × 11 × 5
- = 550 cm3
10.A rectangular prism is 15 cm long, 7 cm wide and 2 cm high. Find its volume.
Answer: 210 cm3
- V = length × width × height = 15 × 7 × 2
- = 210 cm3
Marking tips
- Give credit for correct method even when the final answer slips — the working shows where the thinking went right.
- For open-ended tasks, use the success criteria as a checklist rather than looking for one "right" answer.
- Celebrate what went well first, then pick one thing to work on next.
