1.A number line goes from 500 to 700 and is split into 4 equal spaces. The arrow is 3 spaces along from 500. What number does the arrow point to?
Answer: 650
- Each space is (700 − 500) ÷ 4 = 50
- 500 + 3 × 50 = 650
2.A number line goes from 200 to 600 and is split into 4 equal spaces. The arrow is 2 spaces along from 200. What number does the arrow point to?
Answer: 400
- Each space is (600 − 200) ÷ 4 = 100
- 200 + 2 × 100 = 400
3.What number is halfway between 270 and 810?
Answer: 540
- 810 − 270 = 540; half of that is 270
- 270 + 270 = 540
4.A number line goes from 900 to 1,000 and is split into 5 equal spaces. The arrow is 2 spaces along from 900. What number does the arrow point to?
Answer: 940
- Each space is (1,000 − 900) ÷ 5 = 20
- 900 + 2 × 20 = 940
5.A number line goes from 100 to 500 and is split into 4 equal spaces. The arrow is 3 spaces along from 100. What number does the arrow point to?
Answer: 400
- Each space is (500 − 100) ÷ 4 = 100
- 100 + 3 × 100 = 400
6.What number is halfway between 10 and 210?
Answer: 110
- 210 − 10 = 200; half of that is 100
- 10 + 100 = 110
7.A number line goes from 5,000 to 6,000 and is split into 4 equal spaces. The arrow is 2 spaces along from 5,000. What number does the arrow point to?

- 600 + 3 × 25 = 675
9.What number is halfway between 400 and 980?
Answer: 690
- 980 − 400 = 580; half of that is 290
- 400 + 290 = 690

Marking tips
- Give credit for correct method even when the final answer slips — the working shows where the thinking went right.
- For open-ended tasks, use the success criteria as a checklist rather than looking for one "right" answer.
- Celebrate what went well first, then pick one thing to work on next.
