6th Grade Volume of Prisms and Cylinders Worksheet — Level 2 — Answers
Show your work. Volume is measured in cubic units (cm³).
1.A rectangular prism is 5 cm long, 10 cm wide and 9 cm high. Find its volume.
Answer: 450 cm3
- V = length × width × height = 5 × 10 × 9
- = 450 cm3
2.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 12 cm and height 5 cm. The prism is 9 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 270 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 12 × 5 = 30 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 30 × 9
- = 270 cm3
3.A rectangular prism has a volume of 98 cm3. Its base is 7 cm by 7 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 2 cm
- Base area = 7 × 7 = 49 cm2
- Height = 98 ÷ 49 = 2 cm
4.A rectangular prism has a volume of 144 cm3. Its base is 6 cm by 6 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 4 cm
- Base area = 6 × 6 = 36 cm2
- Height = 144 ÷ 36 = 4 cm
5.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 4 cm and height 2 cm. The prism is 7 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 28 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 4 × 2 = 4 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 4 × 7
- = 28 cm3
6.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 16 cm and height 5 cm. The prism is 6 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 240 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 16 × 5 = 40 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 40 × 6
- = 240 cm3
7.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 22 cm and height 8 cm. The prism is 3 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 264 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 22 × 8 = 88 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 88 × 3
- = 264 cm3
8.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 16 cm and height 7 cm. The prism is 12 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 672 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 16 × 7 = 56 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 56 × 12
- = 672 cm3
9.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 24 cm and height 2 cm. The prism is 5 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 120 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 24 × 2 = 24 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 24 × 5
- = 120 cm3
10.A rectangular prism is 7 cm long, 4 cm wide and 6 cm high. Find its volume.
Answer: 168 cm3
- V = length × width × height = 7 × 4 × 6
- = 168 cm3
Marking tips
- Give credit for correct method even when the final answer slips — the working shows where the thinking went right.
- For open-ended tasks, use the success criteria as a checklist rather than looking for one "right" answer.
- Celebrate what went well first, then pick one thing to work on next.
