6th Grade Volume of Prisms and Cylinders Worksheet — Level 2 — Practice Set 2 — Answers
Show your work. Volume is measured in cubic units (cm³).
1.A rectangular prism has a volume of 126 cm3. Its base is 9 cm by 7 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 2 cm
- Base area = 9 × 7 = 63 cm2
- Height = 126 ÷ 63 = 2 cm
2.A rectangular prism is 4 cm long, 2 cm wide and 9 cm high. Find its volume.
Answer: 72 cm3
- V = length × width × height = 4 × 2 × 9
- = 72 cm3
3.A rectangular prism has a volume of 315 cm3. Its base is 9 cm by 7 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 5 cm
- Base area = 9 × 7 = 63 cm2
- Height = 315 ÷ 63 = 5 cm
4.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 22 cm and height 5 cm. The prism is 4 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 220 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 22 × 5 = 55 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 55 × 4
- = 220 cm3
5.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 22 cm and height 8 cm. The prism is 11 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 968 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 22 × 8 = 88 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 88 × 11
- = 968 cm3
6.A rectangular prism is 8 cm long, 3 cm wide and 4 cm high. Find its volume.
Answer: 96 cm3
- V = length × width × height = 8 × 3 × 4
- = 96 cm3
7.A rectangular prism is 14 cm long, 2 cm wide and 2 cm high. Find its volume.
Answer: 56 cm3
- V = length × width × height = 14 × 2 × 2
- = 56 cm3
8.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 24 cm and height 8 cm. The prism is 11 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 1,056 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 24 × 8 = 96 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 96 × 11
- = 1,056 cm3
9.A rectangular prism has a volume of 441 cm3. Its base is 9 cm by 7 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 7 cm
- Base area = 9 × 7 = 63 cm2
- Height = 441 ÷ 63 = 7 cm
10.A rectangular prism has a volume of 90 cm3. Its base is 3 cm by 6 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 5 cm
- Base area = 3 × 6 = 18 cm2
- Height = 90 ÷ 18 = 5 cm
Marking tips
- Give credit for correct method even when the final answer slips — the working shows where the thinking went right.
- For open-ended tasks, use the success criteria as a checklist rather than looking for one "right" answer.
- Celebrate what went well first, then pick one thing to work on next.
