8th Grade Coordinates: Quadrants, Midpoints and Distance Worksheet — Level 3 — Practice Set 3 — Answers
Midpoint = (average of the x-values, average of the y-values). Distance: use Pythagoras with the horizontal and vertical changes.
1.Find the distance between (2, −5) and (7, −12), correct to 1 decimal place.
Answer: 8.6
- Horizontal change = 5, vertical change = 7
- d = √(52 + 72) = √74
- = 8.6
2.Find the midpoint of the segment joining (8, −6) and (2, −4).
Answer: (5, −5)
- x: (8 + 2) ÷ 2 = 5
- y: (−6 + (−4)) ÷ 2 = −5
3.Find the midpoint of the segment joining (1, −4) and (6, 1).
Answer: (3.5, −1.5)
- x: (1 + 6) ÷ 2 = 3.5
- y: (−4 + 1) ÷ 2 = −1.5
4.Find the distance between (−5, −6) and (1, −14).
Answer: 10
- Horizontal change = 6, vertical change = 8
- d = √(62 + 82) = √100
- = 10
5.Find the distance between (5, 1) and (0, 13).
Answer: 13
- Horizontal change = 5, vertical change = 12
- d = √(52 + 122) = √169
- = 13
6.Find the distance between (4, 4) and (−5, −8).
Answer: 15
- Horizontal change = 9, vertical change = 12
- d = √(92 + 122) = √225
- = 15
7.Find the distance between (−3, −1) and (−9, 7).
Answer: 10
- Horizontal change = 6, vertical change = 8
- d = √(62 + 82) = √100
- = 10
8.Find the midpoint of the segment joining (−3, 0) and (9, 1).
Answer: (3, 0.5)
- x: (−3 + 9) ÷ 2 = 3
- y: (0 + 1) ÷ 2 = 0.5
9.Find the distance between (−1, −3) and (−7, 5).
Answer: 10
- Horizontal change = 6, vertical change = 8
- d = √(62 + 82) = √100
- = 10
10.Find the midpoint of the segment joining (8, 1) and (−3, −2).
Answer: (2.5, −0.5)
- x: (8 + (−3)) ÷ 2 = 2.5
- y: (1 + (−2)) ÷ 2 = −0.5
11.Find the midpoint of the segment joining (−9, −4) and (−3, 3).
Answer: (−6, −0.5)
- x: (−9 + (−3)) ÷ 2 = −6
- y: (−4 + 3) ÷ 2 = −0.5
12.Find the midpoint of the segment joining (2, −4) and (1, 1).
Answer: (1.5, −1.5)
- x: (2 + 1) ÷ 2 = 1.5
- y: (−4 + 1) ÷ 2 = −1.5
Marking tips
- Give credit for correct method even when the final answer slips — the working shows where the thinking went right.
- For open-ended tasks, use the success criteria as a checklist rather than looking for one "right" answer.
- Celebrate what went well first, then pick one thing to work on next.
