8th Grade Coordinates: Quadrants, Midpoints and Distance Worksheet — Level 3 — Practice Set 4 — Answers

Midpoint = (average of the x-values, average of the y-values). Distance: use Pythagoras with the horizontal and vertical changes.

1.Find the midpoint of the segment joining (−5, −6) and (−5, 9).

Answer: (−5, 1.5)

  1. x: (−5 + (−5)) ÷ 2 = −5
  2. y: (−6 + 9) ÷ 2 = 1.5
2.Find the midpoint of the segment joining (3, 5) and (−1, −9).

Answer: (1, −2)

  1. x: (3 + (−1)) ÷ 2 = 1
  2. y: (5 + (−9)) ÷ 2 = −2
3.Find the midpoint of the segment joining (3, −6) and (3, −9).

Answer: (3, −7.5)

  1. x: (3 + 3) ÷ 2 = 3
  2. y: (−6 + (−9)) ÷ 2 = −7.5
4.Find the midpoint of the segment joining (−8, −6) and (−1, 0).

Answer: (−4.5, −3)

  1. x: (−8 + (−1)) ÷ 2 = −4.5
  2. y: (−6 + 0) ÷ 2 = −3
5.Find the midpoint of the segment joining (2, 5) and (1, 1).

Answer: (1.5, 3)

  1. x: (2 + 1) ÷ 2 = 1.5
  2. y: (5 + 1) ÷ 2 = 3
6.Find the distance between (4, 4) and (−1, 16).

Answer: 13

  1. Horizontal change = 5, vertical change = 12
  2. d = √(52 + 122) = √169
  3. = 13
7.Find the distance between (1, 1) and (−5, −7).

Answer: 10

  1. Horizontal change = 6, vertical change = 8
  2. d = √(62 + 82) = √100
  3. = 10
8.Find the distance between (5, 5) and (2, 12), correct to 1 decimal place.

Answer: 7.6

  1. Horizontal change = 3, vertical change = 7
  2. d = √(32 + 72) = √58
  3. = 7.6
9.Find the distance between (4, 4) and (9, 16).

Answer: 13

  1. Horizontal change = 5, vertical change = 12
  2. d = √(52 + 122) = √169
  3. = 13
10.Find the midpoint of the segment joining (−5, 9) and (7, −8).

Answer: (1, 0.5)

  1. x: (−5 + 7) ÷ 2 = 1
  2. y: (9 + (−8)) ÷ 2 = 0.5
11.Find the midpoint of the segment joining (−3, −4) and (8, 2).

Answer: (2.5, −1)

  1. x: (−3 + 8) ÷ 2 = 2.5
  2. y: (−4 + 2) ÷ 2 = −1
12.Find the distance between (−3, −2) and (−9, −10).

Answer: 10

  1. Horizontal change = 6, vertical change = 8
  2. d = √(62 + 82) = √100
  3. = 10

Marking tips

  • Give credit for correct method even when the final answer slips — the working shows where the thinking went right.
  • For open-ended tasks, use the success criteria as a checklist rather than looking for one "right" answer.
  • Celebrate what went well first, then pick one thing to work on next.
