1.A rectangular prism has a volume of 280 cm3. Its base is 5 cm by 8 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 7 cm
- Base area = 5 × 8 = 40 cm2
- Height = 280 ÷ 40 = 7 cm
2.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 12 cm and height 9 cm. The prism is 11 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 594 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 12 × 9 = 54 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 54 × 11
- = 594 cm3
3.A cylinder has a radius of 7 cm and a height of 7 cm. Find its volume, correct to 1 decimal place.
Answer: 1077.6 cm3
- V = π × r2 × h = π × 72 × 7
- = π × 343
- ≈ 1077.6 cm3
4.A rectangular prism has a volume of 168 cm3. Its base is 4 cm by 7 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 6 cm
- Base area = 4 × 7 = 28 cm2
- Height = 168 ÷ 28 = 6 cm
5.A rectangular prism has a volume of 288 cm3. Its base is 8 cm by 4 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 9 cm
- Base area = 8 × 4 = 32 cm2
- Height = 288 ÷ 32 = 9 cm
6.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 18 cm and height 10 cm. The prism is 3 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 270 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 18 × 10 = 90 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 90 × 3
- = 270 cm3
7.A cylinder has a radius of 8 cm and a height of 13 cm. Find its volume, correct to 1 decimal place.
Answer: 2613.8 cm3
- V = π × r2 × h = π × 82 × 13
- = π × 832
- ≈ 2613.8 cm3
8.A rectangular prism has a volume of 160 cm3. Its base is 10 cm by 4 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 4 cm
- Base area = 10 × 4 = 40 cm2
- Height = 160 ÷ 40 = 4 cm
9.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 16 cm and height 9 cm. The prism is 15 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 1,080 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 16 × 9 = 72 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 72 × 15
- = 1,080 cm3
10.A rectangular prism has a volume of 792 cm3. Its base is 11 cm by 8 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 9 cm
- Base area = 11 × 8 = 88 cm2
- Height = 792 ÷ 88 = 9 cm
Marking tips
- Give credit for correct method even when the final answer slips — the working shows where the thinking went right.
- For open-ended tasks, use the success criteria as a checklist rather than looking for one "right" answer.
- Celebrate what went well first, then pick one thing to work on next.
