8th Grade Volume of Prisms and Cylinders Worksheet — Level 2 — Answers
Show your work. Volume is measured in cubic units (cm³).
1.A rectangular prism has a volume of 360 cm3. Its base is 5 cm by 8 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 9 cm
- Base area = 5 × 8 = 40 cm2
- Height = 360 ÷ 40 = 9 cm
2.A rectangular prism has a volume of 192 cm3. Its base is 6 cm by 4 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 8 cm
- Base area = 6 × 4 = 24 cm2
- Height = 192 ÷ 24 = 8 cm
3.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 22 cm and height 7 cm. The prism is 3 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 231 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 22 × 7 = 77 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 77 × 3
- = 231 cm3
4.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 4 cm and height 10 cm. The prism is 6 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 120 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 4 × 10 = 20 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 20 × 6
- = 120 cm3
5.A rectangular prism has a volume of 135 cm3. Its base is 3 cm by 5 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 9 cm
- Base area = 3 × 5 = 15 cm2
- Height = 135 ÷ 15 = 9 cm
6.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 12 cm and height 6 cm. The prism is 3 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 108 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 12 × 6 = 36 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 36 × 3
- = 108 cm3
7.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 4 cm and height 3 cm. The prism is 6 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 36 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 4 × 3 = 6 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 6 × 6
- = 36 cm3
8.A rectangular prism is 5 cm long, 7 cm wide and 2 cm high. Find its volume.
Answer: 70 cm3
- V = length × width × height = 5 × 7 × 2
- = 70 cm3
9.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 22 cm and height 3 cm. The prism is 7 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 231 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 22 × 3 = 33 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 33 × 7
- = 231 cm3
10.A rectangular prism is 8 cm long, 9 cm wide and 10 cm high. Find its volume.
Answer: 720 cm3
- V = length × width × height = 8 × 9 × 10
- = 720 cm3
Marking tips
- Give credit for correct method even when the final answer slips — the working shows where the thinking went right.
- For open-ended tasks, use the success criteria as a checklist rather than looking for one "right" answer.
- Celebrate what went well first, then pick one thing to work on next.
