8th Grade Volume of Prisms and Cylinders Worksheet — Level 2 — Practice Set 2 — Answers
Show your work. Volume is measured in cubic units (cm³).
1.A rectangular prism has a volume of 120 cm3. Its base is 10 cm by 4 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 3 cm
- Base area = 10 × 4 = 40 cm2
- Height = 120 ÷ 40 = 3 cm
2.A rectangular prism is 11 cm long, 11 cm wide and 3 cm high. Find its volume.
Answer: 363 cm3
- V = length × width × height = 11 × 11 × 3
- = 363 cm3
3.A rectangular prism is 9 cm long, 8 cm wide and 3 cm high. Find its volume.
Answer: 216 cm3
- V = length × width × height = 9 × 8 × 3
- = 216 cm3
4.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 6 cm and height 9 cm. The prism is 11 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 297 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 6 × 9 = 27 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 27 × 11
- = 297 cm3
5.A rectangular prism is 6 cm long, 11 cm wide and 3 cm high. Find its volume.
Answer: 198 cm3
- V = length × width × height = 6 × 11 × 3
- = 198 cm3
6.A rectangular prism has a volume of 126 cm3. Its base is 7 cm by 9 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 2 cm
- Base area = 7 × 9 = 63 cm2
- Height = 126 ÷ 63 = 2 cm
7.A rectangular prism is 4 cm long, 3 cm wide and 10 cm high. Find its volume.
Answer: 120 cm3
- V = length × width × height = 4 × 3 × 10
- = 120 cm3
8.A rectangular prism is 6 cm long, 12 cm wide and 9 cm high. Find its volume.
Answer: 648 cm3
- V = length × width × height = 6 × 12 × 9
- = 648 cm3
9.A rectangular prism is 10 cm long, 12 cm wide and 9 cm high. Find its volume.
Answer: 1,080 cm3
- V = length × width × height = 10 × 12 × 9
- = 1,080 cm3
10.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 20 cm and height 5 cm. The prism is 13 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 650 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 20 × 5 = 50 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 50 × 13
- = 650 cm3
Marking tips
- Give credit for correct method even when the final answer slips — the working shows where the thinking went right.
- For open-ended tasks, use the success criteria as a checklist rather than looking for one "right" answer.
- Celebrate what went well first, then pick one thing to work on next.
