8th Grade Volume of Prisms and Cylinders Worksheet — Level 2 — Practice Set 4 — Answers
Show your work. Volume is measured in cubic units (cm³).
1.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 10 cm and height 2 cm. The prism is 8 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 80 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 10 × 2 = 10 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 10 × 8
- = 80 cm3
2.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 10 cm and height 2 cm. The prism is 6 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 60 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 10 × 2 = 10 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 10 × 6
- = 60 cm3
3.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 14 cm and height 3 cm. The prism is 12 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 252 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 14 × 3 = 21 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 21 × 12
- = 252 cm3
4.A rectangular prism is 7 cm long, 7 cm wide and 6 cm high. Find its volume.
Answer: 294 cm3
- V = length × width × height = 7 × 7 × 6
- = 294 cm3
5.A rectangular prism is 11 cm long, 5 cm wide and 9 cm high. Find its volume.
Answer: 495 cm3
- V = length × width × height = 11 × 5 × 9
- = 495 cm3
6.A rectangular prism has a volume of 180 cm3. Its base is 10 cm by 6 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 3 cm
- Base area = 10 × 6 = 60 cm2
- Height = 180 ÷ 60 = 3 cm
7.A rectangular prism has a volume of 216 cm3. Its base is 6 cm by 6 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 6 cm
- Base area = 6 × 6 = 36 cm2
- Height = 216 ÷ 36 = 6 cm
8.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 10 cm and height 10 cm. The prism is 14 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 700 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 10 × 10 = 50 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 50 × 14
- = 700 cm3
9.A rectangular prism is 4 cm long, 4 cm wide and 9 cm high. Find its volume.
Answer: 144 cm3
- V = length × width × height = 4 × 4 × 9
- = 144 cm3
10.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 4 cm and height 5 cm. The prism is 15 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 150 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 4 × 5 = 10 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 10 × 15
- = 150 cm3
Marking tips
- Give credit for correct method even when the final answer slips — the working shows where the thinking went right.
- For open-ended tasks, use the success criteria as a checklist rather than looking for one "right" answer.
- Celebrate what went well first, then pick one thing to work on next.
