9th Grade Coordinates: Quadrants, Midpoints and Distance Worksheet — Level 3 — Answers
Midpoint = (average of the x-values, average of the y-values). Distance: use Pythagoras with the horizontal and vertical changes.
1.Find the midpoint of the segment joining (−8, −8) and (−6, 9).
Answer: (−7, 0.5)
- x: (−8 + (−6)) ÷ 2 = −7
- y: (−8 + 9) ÷ 2 = 0.5
2.Find the distance between (−6, −4) and (0, 4).
Answer: 10
- Horizontal change = 6, vertical change = 8
- d = √(62 + 82) = √100
- = 10
3.Find the midpoint of the segment joining (−8, −9) and (8, 2).
Answer: (0, −3.5)
- x: (−8 + 8) ÷ 2 = 0
- y: (−9 + 2) ÷ 2 = −3.5
4.Find the midpoint of the segment joining (−8, 0) and (−8, −9).
Answer: (−8, −4.5)
- x: (−8 + (−8)) ÷ 2 = −8
- y: (0 + (−9)) ÷ 2 = −4.5
5.Find the distance between (−2, 1) and (−7, −11).
Answer: 13
- Horizontal change = 5, vertical change = 12
- d = √(52 + 122) = √169
- = 13
6.Find the midpoint of the segment joining (−6, 2) and (−3, 0).
Answer: (−4.5, 1)
- x: (−6 + (−3)) ÷ 2 = −4.5
- y: (2 + 0) ÷ 2 = 1
7.Find the distance between (−5, −3) and (−9, −9), correct to 1 decimal place.
Answer: 7.2
- Horizontal change = 4, vertical change = 6
- d = √(42 + 62) = √52
- = 7.2
8.Find the distance between (4, 3) and (−4, −12).
Answer: 17
- Horizontal change = 8, vertical change = 15
- d = √(82 + 152) = √289
- = 17
9.Find the distance between (−4, 6) and (4, −9).
Answer: 17
- Horizontal change = 8, vertical change = 15
- d = √(82 + 152) = √289
- = 17
10.Find the midpoint of the segment joining (−3, 3) and (9, 8).
Answer: (3, 5.5)
- x: (−3 + 9) ÷ 2 = 3
- y: (3 + 8) ÷ 2 = 5.5
11.Find the midpoint of the segment joining (8, −2) and (−4, −1).
Answer: (2, −1.5)
- x: (8 + (−4)) ÷ 2 = 2
- y: (−2 + (−1)) ÷ 2 = −1.5
12.Find the midpoint of the segment joining (0, 5) and (−7, 3).
Answer: (−3.5, 4)
- x: (0 + (−7)) ÷ 2 = −3.5
- y: (5 + 3) ÷ 2 = 4
Marking tips
- Give credit for correct method even when the final answer slips — the working shows where the thinking went right.
- For open-ended tasks, use the success criteria as a checklist rather than looking for one "right" answer.
- Celebrate what went well first, then pick one thing to work on next.
