9th Grade Coordinates: Quadrants, Midpoints and Distance Worksheet — Level 3 — Practice Set 4 — Answers
Midpoint = (average of the x-values, average of the y-values). Distance: use Pythagoras with the horizontal and vertical changes.
1.Find the distance between (2, 2) and (−6, 17).
Answer: 17
- Horizontal change = 8, vertical change = 15
- d = √(82 + 152) = √289
- = 17
2.Find the midpoint of the segment joining (−1, 8) and (3, 5).
Answer: (1, 6.5)
- x: (−1 + 3) ÷ 2 = 1
- y: (8 + 5) ÷ 2 = 6.5
3.Find the distance between (1, 5) and (−8, −7).
Answer: 15
- Horizontal change = 9, vertical change = 12
- d = √(92 + 122) = √225
- = 15
4.Find the distance between (−3, −4) and (−12, −16).
Answer: 15
- Horizontal change = 9, vertical change = 12
- d = √(92 + 122) = √225
- = 15
5.Find the distance between (−4, −2) and (1, −14).
Answer: 13
- Horizontal change = 5, vertical change = 12
- d = √(52 + 122) = √169
- = 13
6.Find the distance between (−1, −6) and (−6, 0), correct to 1 decimal place.
Answer: 7.8
- Horizontal change = 5, vertical change = 6
- d = √(52 + 62) = √61
- = 7.8
7.Find the distance between (5, −2) and (8, 2).
Answer: 5
- Horizontal change = 3, vertical change = 4
- d = √(32 + 42) = √25
- = 5
8.Find the midpoint of the segment joining (4, −9) and (−8, 9).
Answer: (−2, 0)
- x: (4 + (−8)) ÷ 2 = −2
- y: (−9 + 9) ÷ 2 = 0
9.Find the midpoint of the segment joining (−1, −9) and (0, 8).
Answer: (−0.5, −0.5)
- x: (−1 + 0) ÷ 2 = −0.5
- y: (−9 + 8) ÷ 2 = −0.5
10.Find the midpoint of the segment joining (3, −5) and (7, 2).
Answer: (5, −1.5)
- x: (3 + 7) ÷ 2 = 5
- y: (−5 + 2) ÷ 2 = −1.5
11.Find the distance between (6, 4) and (7, −2), correct to 1 decimal place.
Answer: 6.1
- Horizontal change = 1, vertical change = 6
- d = √(12 + 62) = √37
- = 6.1
12.Find the midpoint of the segment joining (9, 6) and (−4, 8).
Answer: (2.5, 7)
- x: (9 + (−4)) ÷ 2 = 2.5
- y: (6 + 8) ÷ 2 = 7
Marking tips
- Give credit for correct method even when the final answer slips — the working shows where the thinking went right.
- For open-ended tasks, use the success criteria as a checklist rather than looking for one "right" answer.
- Celebrate what went well first, then pick one thing to work on next.
