9th Grade Slope and Linear Equations Worksheet — Level 2 — Practice Set 3 — Answers
Show your work. Slope = rise ÷ run; the equation of a line can be written as y = (slope)x + (y-intercept).
1.For the line y = 5x − 9, write the slope and the y-intercept.
Answer: slope 5; y-intercept −9
In y = (slope)x + (y-intercept), the number multiplying x is the slope and the constant is where the line crosses the y-axis.
2.A line has a slope of 5 and passes through (0, 3). Find its equation.
Answer: y = 5x + 3
- y = 5x + (y-intercept)
- 3 = 5 × 0 + (y-intercept)
- y-intercept = 3 − 0 = 3
- y = 5x + 3
3.Find the slope of the line through (6, 6) and (5, 5).
Answer: 1
- slope = rise ÷ run = (5 − 6) ÷ (5 − 6)
- = −1 ÷ −1 = 1
4.Find the slope of the line through (1, 6) and (−3, 14).
Answer: −2
- slope = rise ÷ run = (14 − 6) ÷ (−3 − 1)
- = 8 ÷ −4 = −2
5.Find the slope of the line through (−4, 2) and (−3, 6).
Answer: 4
- slope = rise ÷ run = (6 − 2) ÷ (−3 − (−4))
- = 4 ÷ 1 = 4
6.A line has a slope of 5 and passes through (3, 13). Find its equation.
Answer: y = 5x − 2
- y = 5x + (y-intercept)
- 13 = 5 × 3 + (y-intercept)
- y-intercept = 13 − 15 = −2
- y = 5x − 2
7.For the line y = −6x + 4, write the slope and the y-intercept.
Answer: slope −6; y-intercept 4
In y = (slope)x + (y-intercept), the number multiplying x is the slope and the constant is where the line crosses the y-axis.
8.Find the slope of the line through (−2, 4) and (2, 1).
Answer: −
- slope = rise ÷ run = (1 − 4) ÷ (2 − (−2))
- = −3 ÷ 4 = −
9.Find the slope of the line through (2, −5) and (−2, 2).
Answer: −
- slope = rise ÷ run = (2 − (−5)) ÷ (−2 − 2)
- = 7 ÷ −4 = −
10.A line has a slope of −1 and passes through (−3, 12). Find its equation.
Answer: y = −x + 9
- y = −1x + (y-intercept)
- 12 = −1 × (−3) + (y-intercept)
- y-intercept = 12 − 3 = 9
- y = −x + 9
Marking tips
- Give credit for correct method even when the final answer slips — the working shows where the thinking went right.
- For open-ended tasks, use the success criteria as a checklist rather than looking for one "right" answer.
- Celebrate what went well first, then pick one thing to work on next.
