9th Grade Slope and Linear Equations Worksheet — Level 2 — Practice Set 4 — Answers
Show your work. Slope = rise ÷ run; the equation of a line can be written as y = (slope)x + (y-intercept).
1.A line has a slope of −2 and passes through (−3, 8). Find its equation.
Answer: y = −2x + 2
- y = −2x + (y-intercept)
- 8 = −2 × (−3) + (y-intercept)
- y-intercept = 8 − 6 = 2
- y = −2x + 2
2.For the line y = −6x − 8, write the slope and the y-intercept.
Answer: slope −6; y-intercept −8
In y = (slope)x + (y-intercept), the number multiplying x is the slope and the constant is where the line crosses the y-axis.
3.A line has a slope of 2 and passes through (4, 5). Find its equation.
Answer: y = 2x − 3
- y = 2x + (y-intercept)
- 5 = 2 × 4 + (y-intercept)
- y-intercept = 5 − 8 = −3
- y = 2x − 3
4.A line has a slope of 3 and passes through (−2, −4). Find its equation.
Answer: y = 3x + 2
- y = 3x + (y-intercept)
- −4 = 3 × (−2) + (y-intercept)
- y-intercept = −4 − (−6) = 2
- y = 3x + 2
5.A line has a slope of 4 and passes through (−2, −7). Find its equation.
Answer: y = 4x + 1
- y = 4x + (y-intercept)
- −7 = 4 × (−2) + (y-intercept)
- y-intercept = −7 − (−8) = 1
- y = 4x + 1
6.Find the slope of the line through (3, 2) and (5, 4).
Answer: 1
- slope = rise ÷ run = (4 − 2) ÷ (5 − 3)
- = 2 ÷ 2 = 1
7.Find the slope of the line through (6, 2) and (5, −2).
Answer: 4
- slope = rise ÷ run = (−2 − 2) ÷ (5 − 6)
- = −4 ÷ −1 = 4
8.Find the slope of the line through (3, −3) and (4, −4).
Answer: −1
- slope = rise ÷ run = (−4 − (−3)) ÷ (4 − 3)
- = −1 ÷ 1 = −1
9.Find the slope of the line through (4, 0) and (−1, 5).
Answer: −1
- slope = rise ÷ run = (5 − 0) ÷ (−1 − 4)
- = 5 ÷ −5 = −1
10.A line has a slope of −5 and passes through (2, −10). Find its equation.
Answer: y = −5x
- y = −5x + (y-intercept)
- −10 = −5 × 2 + (y-intercept)
- y-intercept = −10 − (−10) = 0
- y = −5x
Marking tips
- Give credit for correct method even when the final answer slips — the working shows where the thinking went right.
- For open-ended tasks, use the success criteria as a checklist rather than looking for one "right" answer.
- Celebrate what went well first, then pick one thing to work on next.
