9th Grade Trigonometry (Finding Sides) Worksheet — Level 3 — Answers
Label the sides (opposite, adjacent, hypotenuse), choose the ratio (SOH CAH TOA), then solve.
1.In a right triangle, the hypotenuse is 24 cm and one angle is 70°. Find the side opposite the 70° angle, to 1 decimal place.
Answer: 22.6 cm
- sin 70° = opposite ÷ hypotenuse
- opposite = 24 × sin 70°
- ≈ 22.6
2.In a right triangle, the side adjacent to a 68° angle is 7 m. Find the opposite side, to 1 decimal place.
Answer: 17.3 m
- tan 68° = opposite ÷ adjacent
- opposite = 7 × tan 68°
- ≈ 17.3
3.In a right triangle, the hypotenuse is 27 cm and one angle is 67°. Find the side opposite the 67° angle, to 1 decimal place.
Answer: 24.9 cm
- sin 67° = opposite ÷ hypotenuse
- opposite = 27 × sin 67°
- ≈ 24.9
4.In a right triangle, the side adjacent to a 59° angle is 16 m. Find the opposite side, to 1 decimal place.
Answer: 26.6 m
- tan 59° = opposite ÷ adjacent
- opposite = 16 × tan 59°
- ≈ 26.6
5.In a right triangle, the hypotenuse is 24 cm and one angle is 33°. Find the side adjacent to the 33° angle, to 1 decimal place.
Answer: 20.1 cm
- cos 33° = adjacent ÷ hypotenuse
- adjacent = 24 × cos 33°
- ≈ 20.1
6.In a right triangle, the side adjacent to a 45° angle is 23 m. Find the opposite side, to 1 decimal place.
Answer: 23 m
- tan 45° = opposite ÷ adjacent
- opposite = 23 × tan 45°
- ≈ 23
7.In a right triangle, the hypotenuse is 10 cm and one angle is 48°. Find the side adjacent to the 48° angle, to 1 decimal place.
Answer: 6.7 cm
- cos 48° = adjacent ÷ hypotenuse
- adjacent = 10 × cos 48°
- ≈ 6.7
8.In a right triangle, the hypotenuse is 17 cm and one angle is 20°. Find the side opposite the 20° angle, to 1 decimal place.
Answer: 5.8 cm
- sin 20° = opposite ÷ hypotenuse
- opposite = 17 × sin 20°
- ≈ 5.8
Marking tips
- Give credit for correct method even when the final answer slips — the working shows where the thinking went right.
- For open-ended tasks, use the success criteria as a checklist rather than looking for one "right" answer.
- Celebrate what went well first, then pick one thing to work on next.
