9th Grade Trigonometry (Finding Sides) Worksheet — Level 3 — Practice Set 2 — Answers
Label the sides (opposite, adjacent, hypotenuse), choose the ratio (SOH CAH TOA), then solve.
1.In a right triangle, the hypotenuse is 14 cm and one angle is 61°. Find the side adjacent to the 61° angle, to 1 decimal place.
Answer: 6.8 cm
- cos 61° = adjacent ÷ hypotenuse
- adjacent = 14 × cos 61°
- ≈ 6.8
2.In a right triangle, the side adjacent to a 23° angle is 20 m. Find the opposite side, to 1 decimal place.
Answer: 8.5 m
- tan 23° = opposite ÷ adjacent
- opposite = 20 × tan 23°
- ≈ 8.5
3.In a right triangle, the side adjacent to a 49° angle is 9 m. Find the opposite side, to 1 decimal place.
Answer: 10.4 m
- tan 49° = opposite ÷ adjacent
- opposite = 9 × tan 49°
- ≈ 10.4
4.In a right triangle, the hypotenuse is 5 cm and one angle is 31°. Find the side adjacent to the 31° angle, to 1 decimal place.
Answer: 4.3 cm
- cos 31° = adjacent ÷ hypotenuse
- adjacent = 5 × cos 31°
- ≈ 4.3
5.In a right triangle, the hypotenuse is 13 cm and one angle is 54°. Find the side opposite the 54° angle, to 1 decimal place.
Answer: 10.5 cm
- sin 54° = opposite ÷ hypotenuse
- opposite = 13 × sin 54°
- ≈ 10.5
6.In a right triangle, the side adjacent to a 64° angle is 17 m. Find the opposite side, to 1 decimal place.
Answer: 34.9 m
- tan 64° = opposite ÷ adjacent
- opposite = 17 × tan 64°
- ≈ 34.9
7.In a right triangle, the hypotenuse is 5 cm and one angle is 48°. Find the side adjacent to the 48° angle, to 1 decimal place.
Answer: 3.3 cm
- cos 48° = adjacent ÷ hypotenuse
- adjacent = 5 × cos 48°
- ≈ 3.3
8.In a right triangle, the hypotenuse is 11 cm and one angle is 44°. Find the side opposite the 44° angle, to 1 decimal place.
Answer: 7.6 cm
- sin 44° = opposite ÷ hypotenuse
- opposite = 11 × sin 44°
- ≈ 7.6
Marking tips
- Give credit for correct method even when the final answer slips — the working shows where the thinking went right.
- For open-ended tasks, use the success criteria as a checklist rather than looking for one "right" answer.
- Celebrate what went well first, then pick one thing to work on next.
