9th Grade Volume of Prisms and Cylinders Worksheet — Level 2 — Answers
Show your work. Volume is measured in cubic units (cm³).
1.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 12 cm and height 9 cm. The prism is 10 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 540 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 12 × 9 = 54 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 54 × 10
- = 540 cm3
2.A rectangular prism has a volume of 216 cm3. Its base is 8 cm by 3 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 9 cm
- Base area = 8 × 3 = 24 cm2
- Height = 216 ÷ 24 = 9 cm
3.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 18 cm and height 3 cm. The prism is 3 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 81 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 18 × 3 = 27 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 27 × 3
- = 81 cm3
4.A rectangular prism has a volume of 60 cm3. Its base is 10 cm by 2 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 3 cm
- Base area = 10 × 2 = 20 cm2
- Height = 60 ÷ 20 = 3 cm
5.A rectangular prism is 13 cm long, 9 cm wide and 10 cm high. Find its volume.
Answer: 1,170 cm3
- V = length × width × height = 13 × 9 × 10
- = 1,170 cm3
6.A rectangular prism has a volume of 120 cm3. Its base is 4 cm by 5 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 6 cm
- Base area = 4 × 5 = 20 cm2
- Height = 120 ÷ 20 = 6 cm
7.A rectangular prism has a volume of 432 cm3. Its base is 6 cm by 8 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 9 cm
- Base area = 6 × 8 = 48 cm2
- Height = 432 ÷ 48 = 9 cm
8.A rectangular prism has a volume of 120 cm3. Its base is 5 cm by 6 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 4 cm
- Base area = 5 × 6 = 30 cm2
- Height = 120 ÷ 30 = 4 cm
9.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 16 cm and height 7 cm. The prism is 14 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 784 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 16 × 7 = 56 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 56 × 14
- = 784 cm3
10.A rectangular prism has a volume of 378 cm3. Its base is 9 cm by 6 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 7 cm
- Base area = 9 × 6 = 54 cm2
- Height = 378 ÷ 54 = 7 cm
Marking tips
- Give credit for correct method even when the final answer slips — the working shows where the thinking went right.
- For open-ended tasks, use the success criteria as a checklist rather than looking for one "right" answer.
- Celebrate what went well first, then pick one thing to work on next.
