9th Grade Volume of Prisms and Cylinders Worksheet — Level 2 — Practice Set 2 — Answers
Show your work. Volume is measured in cubic units (cm³).
1.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 22 cm and height 6 cm. The prism is 11 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 726 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 22 × 6 = 66 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 66 × 11
- = 726 cm3
2.A rectangular prism has a volume of 50 cm3. Its base is 5 cm by 5 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 2 cm
- Base area = 5 × 5 = 25 cm2
- Height = 50 ÷ 25 = 2 cm
3.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 10 cm and height 2 cm. The prism is 14 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 140 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 10 × 2 = 10 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 10 × 14
- = 140 cm3
4.A rectangular prism has a volume of 480 cm3. Its base is 10 cm by 8 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 6 cm
- Base area = 10 × 8 = 80 cm2
- Height = 480 ÷ 80 = 6 cm
5.A rectangular prism is 7 cm long, 7 cm wide and 7 cm high. Find its volume.
Answer: 343 cm3
- V = length × width × height = 7 × 7 × 7
- = 343 cm3
6.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 20 cm and height 9 cm. The prism is 12 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 1,080 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 20 × 9 = 90 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 90 × 12
- = 1,080 cm3
7.A rectangular prism has a volume of 96 cm3. Its base is 4 cm by 8 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 3 cm
- Base area = 4 × 8 = 32 cm2
- Height = 96 ÷ 32 = 3 cm
8.A rectangular prism is 5 cm long, 6 cm wide and 4 cm high. Find its volume.
Answer: 120 cm3
- V = length × width × height = 5 × 6 × 4
- = 120 cm3
9.A rectangular prism has a volume of 75 cm3. Its base is 3 cm by 5 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 5 cm
- Base area = 3 × 5 = 15 cm2
- Height = 75 ÷ 15 = 5 cm
10.A rectangular prism is 2 cm long, 3 cm wide and 5 cm high. Find its volume.
Answer: 30 cm3
- V = length × width × height = 2 × 3 × 5
- = 30 cm3
Marking tips
- Give credit for correct method even when the final answer slips — the working shows where the thinking went right.
- For open-ended tasks, use the success criteria as a checklist rather than looking for one "right" answer.
- Celebrate what went well first, then pick one thing to work on next.
