Free Year 12 Motion in a Straight Line: Displacement, Velocity and Acceleration Worksheet

A senior maths worksheet on calculus for motion along a line: finding velocity and acceleration by differentiating displacement, deciding when a particle is at rest, speeding up or slowing down, telling displacement apart from total distance covered, and integrating acceleration and velocity with initial conditions. Includes exponential and trigonometric motion, and finishes with an extended problem tracking a particle over five seconds. Full working is given for every answer.

Common questions

Who is this worksheet for?

Year 12 students (typically ages 17–18) working on calculus. It is pitched at level 3 · challenge; an easier version is linked above.

Are the answers included?

Yes. The PDF includes a full answer sheet with the working for every question. You can also view the answers online.

How long does it take?

About 50 minutes for 17 questions. Short, regular sessions work best: two or three a week beats one long one.

Part A: Velocity and acceleration from displacement

For a particle moving along a line with displacement x at time t: velocity v = [frac dx/dt] and acceleration a = [frac dv/dt] = [frac d[sup 2]x/dt[sup 2]]. Speed is |v|.

The particle is at rest when v = 0, moving in the positive direction when v > 0, and speeding up when v and a have the same sign (slowing down when they have opposite signs).

Worked example. x = t3 − 6t2 + 9t. Then v = 3t2 − 12t + 9 = 3(t − 1)(t − 3), so it is at rest at t = 1 and t = 3, and a = 6t − 12.

1.A particle moves along a line with displacement x = 4t2 − 3t + 2 m at time t seconds. Find its velocity, in m/s, when t = 2. (answer space)
2.For the same particle, find the acceleration in m/s2. (answer space)
3.A particle has displacement x = t3 − 9t2 + 24t m, for t ≥ 0. Find the times when it is at rest.
4.For the particle in question 3, find the acceleration when t = 4. (answer space)
5.If a particle's velocity is negative and its acceleration is also negative, the particle is slowing down. ☐ True   ☐ False
6.At t = 3 a particle has velocity −1 m/s and acceleration −1 m/s2. Which describes its motion at that moment?
  1. AMoving in the negative direction and speeding up
  2. BMoving in the negative direction and slowing down
  3. CMoving in the positive direction and slowing down
  4. DAt rest

Part B: Displacement and distance covered

Displacement is the change in position, x(end) − x(start); it can be negative. Distance covered counts the full length of the path, so you must find where the particle changes direction (where v = 0) and add the distances for each stage.

Worked example. x = t2 − 4t for 0 ≤ t ≤ 5. v = 2t − 4 = 0 at t = 2. x(0) = 0, x(2) = −4, x(5) = 5. Displacement = 5 m; distance = 4 + 9 = 13 m.

7.For x = t3 − 9t2 + 24t, the displacement from t = 0 to t = 5 is (answer space) m and the total distance covered is (answer space) m.
8.Find the average velocity of that particle over the first 5 seconds. (answer space)

Part C: Working backwards with integration

Reverse the process: v = ∫ a dt and x = ∫ v dt. Each integration adds a constant, found from an initial condition such as the starting velocity or position.

∫ from t₁ to t₂ of v dt is the change in displacement. For the distance covered, split the integral where v changes sign and add the absolute values.

Worked example. a = 6t with v(0) = 2 and x(0) = 1. Then v = 3t2 + 2 and x = t3 + 2t + 1.

9.A particle has velocity v = 3t2 − 2t + 1 m/s and starts at x = 5. Find its position at t = 2.
10.A particle starts from rest at the origin with acceleration a = 4 − 2t m/s2. It is next at rest at t = (answer space) s, when its position is x = (answer space) m.
11.A particle moves with velocity v = 6 − 2t m/s. Find the total distance it travels in the first 5 seconds.
12.For a particle with velocity v(t), what does ∫ from 0 to 4 of v(t) dt give?
  1. AThe change in displacement from t = 0 to t = 4
  2. BThe total distance covered from t = 0 to t = 4
  3. CThe acceleration at t = 4
  4. DThe greatest speed between t = 0 and t = 4
