What's next?

Completed: Rocks, Soil and the Water Cycle

  1. 1Measuring the Weather: Weather Instruments
  2. 2Soil Types: Sand, Clay and Loam

How to use this worksheet

  1. Print the PDF or complete it on screen. Write the student's name and date at the top.
  2. Read the instructions for each part together before starting. Encourage working to be shown.
  3. Mark with the answer sheet. Use the model answers and success criteria as a guide rather than a single right answer.
  4. Record the score, celebrate what went well, then follow the "What's next" suggestion.

Common questions

Who is this worksheet for?

Year 4 students (typically ages 9–10) working on earth, rocks & weather. It is pitched at level 2 · standard.

Are the answers included?

Yes. The PDF includes a full answer sheet with model answers and success criteria where there is more than one good answer. You can also view the answers online.

How long does it take?

About 35 minutes for 17 questions. Short, regular sessions work best: two or three a week beats one long one.

Do I need to sign up to download?

No. Click Download Free PDF and it opens immediately. It is free for personal, classroom and homeschool use.

Use the words igneous, sedimentary, metamorphic, humus, evaporation, condensation and precipitation.

Part A: Rocks and the water cycle

Read the passage. Then circle the best answer.

Rocks are made of minerals. There are three main types of rock. Igneous rock forms when hot, melted rock cools and hardens (for example granite and basalt). Sedimentary rock forms when layers of sand, mud or shells are pressed and cemented together over a very long time (for example sandstone and limestone). Metamorphic rock forms when heat and pressure deep underground change one rock into a new rock (for example limestone changes into marble).

Soil covers much of the land. It is a mixture of tiny pieces of broken-down rock (sand, silt and clay), humus (rotting bits of dead plants and animals), air and water. Plants grow in soil.

Water on Earth keeps moving in the water cycle. Evaporation: the Sun warms water and it turns into water vapour, an invisible gas. Condensation: the water vapour rises, cools and turns into tiny drops of water that make clouds. Precipitation: the drops join together and fall as rain, hail or snow. Collection: the water runs into rivers, lakes, oceans and the ground — and the cycle starts again.

1.How does igneous rock form?
  1. ALayers of sand are pressed together.
  2. BMelted rock cools and hardens.
  3. CShells dissolve in the sea.
  4. DSoil dries out in the Sun.
2.Sandstone is made of grains of sand pressed and stuck together in layers. What type of rock is it?
  1. Asedimentary
  2. Bigneous
  3. Cmetamorphic
  4. Dvolcanic
3.Marble forms when limestone is changed by great heat and pressure deep underground. What type of rock is marble?
  1. Asedimentary
  2. Bigneous
  3. Cmetamorphic
  4. Dsoil
4.In the water cycle, what is evaporation?
  1. AWater vapour cooling into tiny drops
  2. BRain or snow falling from clouds
  3. CWater collecting in oceans and lakes
  4. DLiquid water turning into water vapour
5.What makes clouds form?
  1. AWater vapour cools and condenses into tiny water drops.
  2. BSmoke rises into the sky.
  3. CThe wind blows soil into the air.
  4. DRain evaporates in the ground.

Part B: Words that matter

6.Match each stage of the water cycle to what happens.
  • evaporation
  • condensation
  • precipitation
  • collection
  • water gathers in rivers, lakes and oceans
  • water vapour cools into tiny water drops
  • liquid water turns into water vapour
  • rain, hail or snow falls from clouds
7.Rotting bits of dead plants and animals in soil are called (answer space).
8.Rock that forms when melted rock cools and hardens is called (answer space) rock.
9.Name the four things that soil is made of. (answer space)

Part C: True or false?

Write True or False.

10.The water on Earth is used up and does not come back. ☐ True   ☐ False
11.Water drops form on the outside of a cold glass because water vapour in the air condenses. ☐ True   ☐ False
12.Sedimentary rocks often have layers. ☐ True   ☐ False
