What's next?

Completed: Changes to the Earth's Surface

  1. 1Earthquakes, Volcanoes and Tsunamis: Causes and Effects
  2. 2Extreme Weather: Storms, Floods and Droughts

How to use this worksheet

  1. Print the PDF or complete it on screen. Write the student's name and date at the top.
  2. Read the instructions for each part together before starting. Encourage working to be shown.
  3. Mark with the answer sheet. Use the model answers and success criteria as a guide rather than a single right answer.
  4. Record the score, celebrate what went well, then follow the "What's next" suggestion.

Common questions

Who is this worksheet for?

Year 6 students (typically ages 11–12) working on earth, rocks & weather. It is pitched at level 2 · standard.

Are the answers included?

Yes. The PDF includes a full answer sheet with model answers and success criteria where there is more than one good answer. You can also view the answers online.

How long does it take?

About 35 minutes for 17 questions. Short, regular sessions work best: two or three a week beats one long one.

Remember: weathering breaks rock down, erosion moves it away and deposition drops it somewhere new.

Part A: A changing planet

Read the passage. Then circle the best answer.

The Earth's surface is always changing. Some changes are slow and take a very long time. Others are fast and happen in minutes, hours or days.

Weathering breaks rock into smaller pieces. Water, wind, ice and plant roots can all cause weathering. For example, water can seep into a crack and freeze. Ice takes up more space than water, so it pushes the crack wider.

Erosion is when pieces of rock and soil are moved to a new place by water, wind, ice or gravity. When they are dropped somewhere else, this is called deposition. Over a long time, rivers can carve deep valleys, and wind can build sand dunes.

Volcanoes are openings in the Earth's surface where melted rock, ash and gas come out. Melted rock underground is called magma; when it reaches the surface it is called lava. Lava cools and hardens into new rock, and can build new land.

The Earth's outer layer is broken into huge, slowly moving pieces called plates. An earthquake is a sudden shaking of the ground, often caused when rocks deep underground suddenly move. Earthquakes can crack the ground and cause landslides.

1.What is weathering?
  1. AMoving rock and soil to a new place
  2. BBreaking rock down into smaller pieces
  3. CMelted rock coming out of a volcano

  1. Aweathering
  2. Ban earthquake
  3. Cerosion
  4. Dan eruption
3.What is lava?
  1. AMelted rock that has reached the Earth's surface
  2. BRock broken by plant roots
  3. CSand dropped by the wind
  4. DIce inside a crack
4.Which of these changes the Earth's surface quickly?
  1. Aa river slowly carving a valley
  2. Bwind wearing away a rock
  3. Cplant roots splitting a rock
  4. Dan earthquake
5.Which is a way that plants can cause weathering?
  1. ARoots grow into cracks and push rock apart.
  2. BLeaves make rocks melt.
  3. CFlowers make the ground shake.
  4. DSeeds turn rock into lava.

Part B: Key words

6.Match each word to its meaning.
  • weathering
  • erosion
  • deposition
  • magma
  • lava
  • moving rock pieces and soil to a new place
  • melted rock under the ground
  • breaking rock into smaller pieces
  • melted rock on the Earth's surface
  • dropping rock pieces and soil in a new place
7.Melted rock that cools and hardens forms new (answer space).
8.Water that freezes in a crack takes up (answer space) space and pushes the rock apart.

Part C: True or false?

Write True or False.

9.Weathering and erosion usually change the land slowly. ☐ True   ☐ False
10.Weathering and erosion mean exactly the same thing. ☐ True   ☐ False
