Free Year 5 Sound: Vibrations, Pitch and Volume Worksheet

Students learn that sounds are made by vibrations, that sound travels through solids, liquids and gases but not through empty space, how pitch and volume change, and how our ears detect sound — then investigate pitch with a ruler on the edge of a table.

How to use this worksheet

  1. Print the PDF or complete it on screen. Write the student's name and date at the top.
  2. Read the instructions for each part together before starting. Encourage working to be shown.
  3. Mark with the answer sheet. Use the model answers and success criteria as a guide rather than a single right answer.
  4. Record the score, celebrate what went well, then follow the "What's next" suggestion.

Common questions

Who is this worksheet for?

Year 5 students (typically ages 10–11) working on energy, light, sound & electricity. It is pitched at level 2 · standard.

Are the answers included?

Yes. The PDF includes a full answer sheet with model answers and success criteria where there is more than one good answer. You can also view the answers online.

How long does it take?

About 35 minutes for 17 questions. Short, regular sessions work best: two or three a week beats one long one.

Use the words vibration, pitch, volume, higher, lower, louder and softer in your answers.

Part A: What is sound?

Read the passage. Then circle the best answer.

Every sound is made by something vibrating (moving quickly back and forth). When you pluck a guitar string, it vibrates. When you speak, parts of your throat called vocal cords vibrate. Put your fingers gently on your throat and hum: you can feel the vibrations.

The vibrations pass from particle to particle through a material, so sound can travel through gases (like air), liquids (like water) and solids (like wood or a wall). Sound cannot travel through empty space, because there is nothing to pass the vibrations along.

Pitch is how high or low a sound is. Faster vibrations make a higher pitch. On a stringed instrument, shorter, tighter or thinner strings vibrate faster and make higher notes.

Volume is how loud or soft a sound is. Bigger vibrations make a louder sound. Plucking a string harder makes it louder, not higher.

We hear when sound vibrations travel into our ear and make the thin eardrum vibrate. Messages then travel to the brain. Very loud sounds can damage our hearing, so it is wise to protect our ears.

1.What makes all sounds?
  1. Alight
  2. Bvibrations
  3. Cheat
  4. Dmagnets
2.A guitar string vibrates faster. What happens to the sound?
  1. AThe pitch gets higher.
  2. BThe pitch gets lower.
  3. CThe sound stops.
  4. DThe sound gets quieter.
3.You hit a drum harder. What happens?
  1. AThe pitch gets much higher.
  2. BThe drum stops vibrating.
  3. CThe sound is louder because the vibrations are bigger.
  4. DThe sound travels more slowly.
4.Why can astronauts not hear each other talk in space without radios?
  1. ASpace is too cold.
  2. BSpace is too bright.
  3. CTheir helmets are too thick.
  4. DSpace has no air, so there is nothing for sound to travel through.
5.In a storm, why do we see lightning before we hear thunder?
  1. ALight travels much faster than sound.
  2. BThunder is made after the lightning ends.
  3. COur eyes are closer to the sky than our ears.
  4. DSound travels faster than light.

Part B: Pitch and volume

6.Match each word to its meaning.
  • vibration
  • pitch
  • volume
  • eardrum
  • how high or low a sound is
  • a quick back-and-forth movement
  • a thin layer in the ear that vibrates when sound reaches it
  • how loud or soft a sound is
7.Sound cannot travel through empty (answer space).
8.A shorter guitar string makes a (answer space) pitch than a longer one.
9.A friend plucks a string softly, then hard. What changes, the pitch or the volume? Explain. (answer space)

Part C: True or false?

Write True or False.

10.Sound can travel through water. ☐ True   ☐ False
11.A louder sound always has a higher pitch. ☐ True   ☐ False
12.You can hear a knock through a closed door because sound travels through solids. ☐ True   ☐ False
