Wattle Creek Holiday Park Brochure — Reading Comprehension — Answers
Wattle Creek Holiday Park — Where the Bush Meets the Beach
This is the text of a brochure for a holiday park. Read everything carefully, including the small print at the end marked with stars.
Escape the ordinary. Just two hours from the city, Wattle Creek Holiday Park sits on 20 hectares of peaceful bushland beside a sparkling river, only a five-minute stroll from a golden, uncrowded beach. Whether you want adventure or absolutely nothing at all, Wattle Creek has it waiting for you.
Stay your way
Choose from powered caravan sites, cosy safari tents, or our brand-new family cabins with air conditioning, full kitchens and private decks overlooking the water. Every cabin sleeps up to six, so bring the whole crew.
Fun for everyone
Kids will never be bored with our giant jumping pillow, heated swimming pool, pedal go-kart track and free nightly movies under the stars. Grown-ups can hire a kayak, cast a line off the jetty, or simply sink into a hammock with a good book. Say goodbye to screens and hello to real memories.
Meet the locals
Wake to the sound of kookaburras. Spot kangaroos grazing at dusk. Join our ranger-led bush walk every Saturday morning and learn how to find koalas high in the gum trees.
Eat, drink, relax
Start the day with barista coffee and fresh pastries at the Creekside Café, fire up one of our free gas barbecues at lunch, and gather around the communal fire pit at night. Our camp kitchen has everything you need, so leave the pots and pans at home.
Getting here
Follow the highway north for 150 kilometres, then turn off at the big wooden kangaroo sign. It is sealed road all the way, so you can arrive relaxed and ready for fun.
Don't just take our word for it
'Best family holiday we've ever had. The kids cried when we left!' — Emma, Bendigo.
'We've been coming for eleven years and we'll be back next year too.' — The Nguyen family.
'Clean, friendly and so much to do. We didn't touch our phones for a week.' — Dev, Newcastle.

Part B — Reading between the lines
Use evidence from the brochure to explain your answers.
Answer: No. The $149 price is for two people sharing. The two children would be additional guests at $35 each, making $219 per night, plus linen hire and the park entry fee.
Answer: Testimonials from ordinary people make the park seem trustworthy, because readers believe other families more than they believe the park's own claims.
Answer: To make readers feel they must book quickly or miss out. This sense of urgency pushes people to decide before they think it over.
Answer: Parents. Many parents worry about how much time their children spend on screens, so the brochure promises a holiday that solves that problem.
Part C — Word meanings
- Ais very busy
- Bhas few people on it
- Cis closed
- Dhas no sand
Answer: has few people on it
'Un' means not, so uncrowded means not crowded.
- Afalling over
- Brelaxing completely
- Cswimming
- Dhiding
Answer: relaxing completely
To sink into something comfortable means to relax deeply into it.
Answer: It suggests everyday life is dull or boring, and that the holiday park is an exciting change from it.
Part D — Critical response
Model answer: The brochure for Wattle Creek is designed to make you want to book straight away, so read it carefully. It uses emotive language such as 'golden, uncrowded beach' and 'real memories' to make the park sound perfect, and it uses testimonials from families like the Nguyens so you trust it more than an ordinary advertisement. However, the fine print changes the picture. The 'Stay 4, pay for 3' deal only applies from Sunday to Thursday and not in school holidays, so it may not suit a family. The $149 price is only for two people in a standard cabin, and each extra person costs $35 a night, with linen and park entry on top. If you are planning to swim, remember the pool is only open from October to April. The park may still be great, but you should work out the real cost before booking.
Success criteria:
- Identifies two persuasive techniques with examples from the brochure
- Explains two conditions from the fine print accurately
- Gives clear advice suited to the friend's situation
- Uses a balanced tone, not just negative or positive
- Well-organised paragraph with correct punctuation
Marking tips
- Give credit for correct method even when the final answer slips — the working shows where the thinking went right.
- For open-ended tasks, use the success criteria as a checklist rather than looking for one "right" answer.
- Celebrate what went well first, then pick one thing to work on next.
Great work. Here's what to try next:
