Common questions

Who is this study guide for?

Year 7 students (typically ages 12–13) working on algebraic expressions. It is pitched at level 2 · standard.

Are the answers included?

This is a study guide, so there is no separate answer sheet; the 'Check yourself' questions include answers.

How long does it take?

About 20 minutes. Short, regular sessions work best: two or three a week beats one long one.

What you need to know

In algebra, a letter called a pronumeral (or variable) stands for a number we do not know yet, or a number that can change. An expression is a collection of numbers and pronumerals joined by operations, such as 3x + 5. In that expression, 3x and 5 are terms, 3 is the coefficient of x, and 5 is a constant (a term with no pronumeral). Expressions do not have an equals sign — that is what makes an equation.

ExpressionMeaning
3a3 × a (the × sign is left out)
aba × b
a2a × a
a ÷ 4
2a + 52 × a, then add 5

Writing expressions from words

  • '5 more than a number n' → n + 5
  • 'double m' → 2m
  • '7 less than k' → k − 7 (not 7 − k)
  • '3 lots of y, then subtract 4' → 3y − 4
  • 'a number x divided by 2' →

Substitution. To substitute means to replace the pronumeral with a number and then calculate. Write the multiplication sign back in when you substitute so you do not accidentally join digits together.

Substituting values

  1. If x = 4, find 3x + 2: 3x + 2 = 3 × 4 + 2. Multiply first (BODMAS): 3 × 4 = 12, then 12 + 2 = 14.
  2. If a = 5 and b = 2, find 2a − b: 2 × 5 − 2 = 10 − 2 = 8.
  3. With the same values, find ab + b: 5 × 2 + 2 = 10 + 2 = 12.
Common mistake: substituting x = 4 into 3x and writing 34. 3x means 3 × x, so it becomes 3 × 4 = 12.

Collecting like terms. Like terms have exactly the same pronumeral part: 3x and 5x are like terms, and so are 4ab and −ab. You can add or subtract like terms by adding or subtracting their coefficients: 3x + 5x = 8x. Unlike terms, such as 3x and 2y or x and x2, cannot be combined.

Simplify 5m + 3n − 2m + n

  1. Group the like terms: (5m − 2m) + (3n + n).
  2. 5m − 2m = 3m.
  3. 3n + n = 4n (remember n means 1n).
  4. Answer: 3m + 4n.
Common mistake: 3x + 2 = 5x. The 2 has no x, so it is not a like term and the expression is already as simple as it can be. Likewise 4a + 2b − a = 3a + 2b, not 5ab.

Check yourself

  1. Write an expression for '7 less than k'.
  2. If x = 6, find the value of 2x − 5.
  3. Simplify 4p + 3p.
  4. Simplify 6a + 2 − a.
  5. If a = 3 and b = 4, find ab + b.
  6. Simplify 3x + 4y − x + y.

Answers: 1. k − 7 2. 7 3. 7p 4. 5a + 2 5. 16 6. 2x + 5y
