Free Year 8 Solving Linear Equations

Explains the balance method for solving equations: do the same thing to both sides using inverse operations. Builds from one-step equations to two-step equations, equations with brackets and equations with pronumerals on both sides, with a check-by-substitution habit throughout.

Common questions

Who is this study guide for?

Year 8 students (typically ages 13–14) working on linear equations. It is pitched at level 2 · standard.

Are the answers included?

This is a study guide, so there is no separate answer sheet; the 'Check yourself' questions include answers.

How long does it take?

About 20 minutes. Short, regular sessions work best: two or three a week beats one long one.

What you need to know

An equation says that two expressions are equal, like 3x + 5 = 20. To solve it means to find the value of the pronumeral that makes the statement true. Think of the equals sign as the middle of a balance scale: whatever you do to one side, you must do to the other, or the scale tips. Your goal is to get the pronumeral by itself on one side.

To undo an operation, use its inverse. Work backwards through the order of operations: undo any adding or subtracting first, then undo multiplying or dividing.

Operation in the equationUndo it with
+ 7− 7
− 3+ 3
× 4 (as in 4x)÷ 4
÷ 5 (as in )× 5

One-step: x + 7 = 12 and 4x = 28

  1. x + 7 = 12 → subtract 7 from both sides → x = 12 − 7 = 5.
  2. 4x = 28 → divide both sides by 4 → x = 28 ÷ 4 = 7.

Two-step: 3x + 5 = 20

  1. Subtract 5 from both sides: 3x = 15.
  2. Divide both sides by 3: x = 5.
  3. Check: 3 × 5 + 5 = 15 + 5 = 20. Correct.

With a fraction: − 2 = 3

  1. Add 2 to both sides: = 5.
  2. Multiply both sides by 4: x = 20.
  3. Check: 20 ÷ 4 − 2 = 5 − 2 = 3. Correct.

With brackets: 2(x + 3) = 14

  1. Expand the brackets: 2x + 6 = 14.
  2. Subtract 6: 2x = 8.
  3. Divide by 2: x = 4.
  4. (Shortcut: because 14 ÷ 2 = 7 is a whole number, you could divide both sides by 2 first to get x + 3 = 7.)

Pronumerals on both sides: 5x − 3 = 2x + 9

  1. Subtract 2x from both sides so the pronumerals are together: 3x − 3 = 9.
  2. Add 3 to both sides: 3x = 12.
  3. Divide by 3: x = 4.
  4. Check: left side 5 × 4 − 3 = 17; right side 2 × 4 + 9 = 17. Correct.
Common mistake: doing an operation to only one side, or undoing in the wrong order. In 3x + 5 = 20, dividing by 3 first gives x + = , which is correct but messy. Undo the + 5 first.
Negative coefficients: 10 − 2x = 4 → subtract 10 from both sides → −2x = −6 → divide by −2 → x = 3. Dividing a negative by a negative gives a positive. Whatever the equation, always check by substituting your answer back into the original — it takes ten seconds and catches most errors.

Check yourself

  1. x − 9 = 4
  2. 5x = 45
  3. 2x + 3 = 17
  4. + 1 = 6
  5. 4x − 2 = 2x + 10
  6. 3(x − 2) = 15

Answers: 1. x = 13 2. x = 9 3. x = 7 4. x = 15 5. x = 6 6. x = 7
