Students will practise

  • describing the properties of solids, liquids and gases
  • sorting materials by state
  • explaining how heating and cooling change state
  • naming melting, freezing, evaporation and condensation
  • identifying variables in a fair test

What's next?

Completed: Solids, Liquids and Gases

  1. 1Evaporation: What Makes Water Dry Faster?
  2. 2Reversible and Irreversible Changes

How to use this worksheet

  1. Print the PDF or complete it on screen. Write the student's name and date at the top.
  2. Read the instructions for each part together before starting. Encourage working to be shown.
  3. Mark with the answer sheet. Use the model answers and success criteria as a guide rather than a single right answer.
  4. Record the score, celebrate what went well, then follow the "What's next" suggestion.

Common questions

Who is this worksheet for?

Year 4 students (typically ages 8–9) working on states of matter & materials. It is pitched at level 1 · easier; a harder version is linked above.

Are the answers included?

Yes. The PDF includes a full answer sheet with model answers and success criteria where there is more than one good answer. You can also view the answers online.

How long does it take?

About 30 minutes for 14 questions. Short, regular sessions work best: two or three a week beats one long one.

Read carefully and think about whether each material is being heated or cooled.

Part A: Three states

Read the passage. Then circle the best answer.

Everything around us is a solid, a liquid or a gas.

A solid keeps its own shape, like a rock or a spoon. A liquid flows and takes the shape of its container, like water or juice. A gas spreads out to fill any space it is in, like the air around us.

Heating and cooling can change a material from one state to another. Heating ice makes it melt into liquid water. Cooling liquid water enough makes it freeze into ice.

When liquid water is warmed, it can evaporate and become a gas called water vapour. When water vapour cools, it can condense back into tiny drops of liquid water.

1.Which of these is a liquid?
  1. Aa brick
  2. Bmilk
  3. Ca marble
  4. Da coin
2.Which of these is a gas?
  1. Athe air in a balloon
  2. Ban ice cube
  3. Cjuice
  4. Da pencil
3.What happens to ice when it is heated?
  1. AIt freezes.
  2. BIt condenses.
  3. CIt melts.
  4. DIt stays solid.
4.A puddle slowly disappears on a warm day. What happened to the water?
  1. AIt froze.
  2. BIt melted.
  3. CIt condensed.
  4. DIt evaporated.

Part B: Changes of state

5.Match each change to its name.
  • solid → liquid
  • liquid → solid
  • liquid → gas
  • gas → liquid
  • condensation
  • melting
  • evaporation
  • freezing
6.Chocolate held in a warm hand starts to (answer space).
7.Juice put in the freezer will (answer space) and become solid.

Part C: True or false?

Write True or False.

8.A liquid keeps its own shape when you pour it into a new cup. ☐ True   ☐ False
9.Heating can change a solid into a liquid. ☐ True   ☐ False
10.Water drops on the outside of a cold glass have leaked through the glass. ☐ True   ☐ False
11.Melted ice can be frozen again to make ice. ☐ True   ☐ False
