Year 6 Volume of Prisms and Cylinders Worksheet — Level 2 — Answers
Show your working. Volume is measured in cubic units (cm³).
1.A rectangular prism has a volume of 120 cm3. Its base is 10 cm by 2 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 6 cm
- Base area = 10 × 2 = 20 cm2
- Height = 120 ÷ 20 = 6 cm
2.A rectangular prism has a volume of 180 cm3. Its base is 4 cm by 9 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 5 cm
- Base area = 4 × 9 = 36 cm2
- Height = 180 ÷ 36 = 5 cm
3.A rectangular prism is 7 cm long, 4 cm wide and 8 cm high. Find its volume.
Answer: 224 cm3
- V = length × width × height = 7 × 4 × 8
- = 224 cm3
4.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 12 cm and height 3 cm. The prism is 12 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 216 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 12 × 3 = 18 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 18 × 12
- = 216 cm3
5.A rectangular prism is 9 cm long, 9 cm wide and 6 cm high. Find its volume.
Answer: 486 cm3
- V = length × width × height = 9 × 9 × 6
- = 486 cm3
6.A rectangular prism has a volume of 60 cm3. Its base is 3 cm by 5 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 4 cm
- Base area = 3 × 5 = 15 cm2
- Height = 60 ÷ 15 = 4 cm
7.A rectangular prism has a volume of 280 cm3. Its base is 10 cm by 7 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 4 cm
- Base area = 10 × 7 = 70 cm2
- Height = 280 ÷ 70 = 4 cm
8.A rectangular prism has a volume of 105 cm3. Its base is 3 cm by 5 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 7 cm
- Base area = 3 × 5 = 15 cm2
- Height = 105 ÷ 15 = 7 cm
9.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 22 cm and height 9 cm. The prism is 12 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 1,188 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 22 × 9 = 99 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 99 × 12
- = 1,188 cm3
10.A rectangular prism has a volume of 180 cm3. Its base is 9 cm by 4 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 5 cm
- Base area = 9 × 4 = 36 cm2
- Height = 180 ÷ 36 = 5 cm
Marking tips
- Give credit for correct method even when the final answer slips — the working shows where the thinking went right.
- For open-ended tasks, use the success criteria as a checklist rather than looking for one "right" answer.
- Celebrate what went well first, then pick one thing to work on next.
