Year 6 Volume of Prisms and Cylinders Worksheet — Level 2 — Practice Set 3 — Answers
Show your working. Volume is measured in cubic units (cm³).
1.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 20 cm and height 10 cm. The prism is 6 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 600 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 20 × 10 = 100 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 100 × 6
- = 600 cm3
2.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 8 cm and height 6 cm. The prism is 6 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 144 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 8 × 6 = 24 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 24 × 6
- = 144 cm3
3.A rectangular prism has a volume of 576 cm3. Its base is 12 cm by 6 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 8 cm
- Base area = 12 × 6 = 72 cm2
- Height = 576 ÷ 72 = 8 cm
4.A rectangular prism is 10 cm long, 10 cm wide and 3 cm high. Find its volume.
Answer: 300 cm3
- V = length × width × height = 10 × 10 × 3
- = 300 cm3
5.A rectangular prism is 9 cm long, 8 cm wide and 8 cm high. Find its volume.
Answer: 576 cm3
- V = length × width × height = 9 × 8 × 8
- = 576 cm3
6.A rectangular prism has a volume of 550 cm3. Its base is 11 cm by 10 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 5 cm
- Base area = 11 × 10 = 110 cm2
- Height = 550 ÷ 110 = 5 cm
7.A rectangular prism is 5 cm long, 10 cm wide and 7 cm high. Find its volume.
Answer: 350 cm3
- V = length × width × height = 5 × 10 × 7
- = 350 cm3
8.A rectangular prism has a volume of 672 cm3. Its base is 12 cm by 7 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 8 cm
- Base area = 12 × 7 = 84 cm2
- Height = 672 ÷ 84 = 8 cm
9.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 10 cm and height 9 cm. The prism is 11 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 495 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 10 × 9 = 45 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 45 × 11
- = 495 cm3
10.A rectangular prism has a volume of 120 cm3. Its base is 4 cm by 5 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 6 cm
- Base area = 4 × 5 = 20 cm2
- Height = 120 ÷ 20 = 6 cm
Marking tips
- Give credit for correct method even when the final answer slips — the working shows where the thinking went right.
- For open-ended tasks, use the success criteria as a checklist rather than looking for one "right" answer.
- Celebrate what went well first, then pick one thing to work on next.
