Free Year 7 Energy Transformations in Everyday Devices Worksheet

Students learn the main forms of energy (movement, heat, light, sound, electrical, chemical and stored energy) and trace how everyday devices such as fans, toasters and radios change energy from one form to another. They draw energy flow diagrams, tell useful energy from wasted energy, and explain why some devices are more efficient than others.

How to use this worksheet

  1. Print the PDF or complete it on screen. Write the student's name and date at the top.
  2. Read the instructions for each part together before starting. Encourage working to be shown.
  3. Mark with the answer sheet. Use the model answers and success criteria as a guide rather than a single right answer.
  4. Record the score, celebrate what went well, then follow the "What's next" suggestion.

Common questions

Who is this worksheet for?

Year 7 students (typically ages 11–12) working on energy, light, sound & electricity. It is pitched at level 2 · standard.

Are the answers included?

Yes. The PDF includes a full answer sheet with model answers and success criteria where there is more than one good answer. You can also view the answers online.

How long does it take?

About 35 minutes for 14 questions. Short, regular sessions work best: two or three a week beats one long one.

Do I need to sign up to download?

No. Click Download Free PDF and it opens immediately. It is free for personal, classroom and homeschool use.

Energy Transformations in Everyday Devices

Name

Date

Score /

Start each energy flow diagram with the form of energy the device takes in.

Part A: Forms of energy

Read the passage, then answer the questions.

Energy is what makes things happen. It comes in different forms. Kinetic energy is the energy of anything that moves. Thermal energy is heat. Light, sound and electrical energy are other forms we use every day.

Some energy is stored. Food, fuels and batteries store chemical energy. An object high up has gravitational energy, and a stretched spring or rubber band has elastic energy.

Energy is never used up or made from nothing. Instead, it is transformed (changed) from one form to another.

1.Match each form of energy to an example.
  • kinetic (movement) energy
  • chemical energy
  • sound energy
  • thermal (heat) energy
  • gravitational energy
  • a hot cup of soup
  • a book resting on a high shelf
  • a ringing bell
  • a rolling ball
  • the energy stored in food and batteries
2.Energy cannot be created or destroyed. It can only be (answer space) from one form to another.
3.The energy stored in a stretched rubber band is called (answer space) energy.

Part B: Energy transformations in devices

Circle the best answer or write your answer.

We can show an energy transformation with an energy flow diagram. For a toaster: electrical energy → heat energy (and a little light energy).

Many devices change energy more than once. A battery-powered lamp: chemical energy → electrical energy → light energy (and some heat).

4.What is the main energy transformation in an electric fan?
  1. Aelectrical → kinetic
  2. Bchemical → light
  3. Clight → electrical
  4. Dkinetic → chemical
5.A solar-powered calculator changes …
  1. Asound energy into light energy
  2. Blight energy into electrical energy
  3. Cheat energy into chemical energy
  4. Dkinetic energy into sound energy
6.When you ride a bike, where does the energy to move the pedals come from?
  1. Aelectrical energy in the bike
  2. Bchemical energy from the food you ate
  3. Clight energy from the Sun hitting the wheels
  4. Dsound energy from the road
7.A ball is dropped from a window. As it falls, its gravitational energy changes mainly into …
  1. Akinetic energy
  2. Bchemical energy
  3. Celectrical energy
  4. Dlight energy
8.Complete the energy flow diagram for a battery-powered radio: chemical energy → [blank] energy → sound energy.
9.Write an energy flow diagram for a campfire. (answer space)

Part C: Useful and wasted energy

Write True or False.

Useful energy is the form we want from a device, such as light from a lamp. Wasted energy is energy changed into forms we do not want, usually heat or sound, which spreads out into the surroundings.

An efficient device turns a large share of its energy into the useful form.

10.A device only ever produces one form of energy. ☐ True   ☐ False
11.The heat given off by a laptop charger is wasted energy. ☐ True   ☐ False
12.An LED light bulb turns more of its electrical energy into light than an old-style glowing filament bulb. ☐ True   ☐ False
