Free 10th Grade Specific Heat Capacity Calculations: Q = mcΔT Worksheet

Students use Q = mcΔT to calculate the energy needed to heat water and metals, and rearrange it to find the specific heat capacity, mass or temperature change. They analyze an experiment that uses an electric heater (E = Pt) to measure the specific heat capacity of an aluminum block, explain why heat losses make the result too high, and apply water's high specific heat capacity to cooling systems, hot-water bottles and coastal climates.

Specific Heat Capacity Calculations: Q = mcΔT

Name

Date

Score /

Q = mcΔT: always check mass is in kg and ΔT is the change in temperature, not the final temperature.

Part A: Using Q = mcΔT

The specific heat capacity (c) of a substance is the energy needed to raise the temperature of 1 kg of it by 1 °C, in J/kg °C.

Q = mcΔT, where Q is the energy in joules, m is the mass in kg and ΔT is the temperature change in °C.

Specific heat capacities (J/kg °C): water 4200 · aluminum 900 · iron 450 · copper 390

1.How much energy is needed to heat 2 kg of water from 20 °C to 100 °C?
2.A 2000 W kettle supplies this energy. Assuming no energy is wasted, how long does it take to boil the water?
3.How much energy is needed to raise the temperature of a 0.5 kg aluminum block by 10 °C?
4.If the same 4500 J were given to a 0.5 kg block of copper, would its temperature rise by more or less than the aluminum's? Calculate it. (answer space)
5.Which statement best describes specific heat capacity?
  1. AThe temperature at which a substance boils
  2. BThe energy needed to raise the temperature of 1 kg of a substance by 1 °C
  3. CThe total thermal energy in an object
  4. DHow quickly a substance conducts heat
6.A 0.2 kg iron pan cools from 180 °C to 30 °C. How much thermal energy does it give out?

Part B: Rearranging the formula

7.9000 J raises the temperature of a 1 kg metal block by 20 °C. Calculate its specific heat capacity and identify the metal.
8.21,000 J of energy is given to 0.5 kg of water. By how much does its temperature rise?
9.84,000 J raises the temperature of some water by 20 °C. What is the mass of the water?
10.Two objects at the same temperature always contain the same amount of thermal energy. ☐ True   ☐ False

Part C: Measuring specific heat capacity

A student placed a 50 W electric heater and a thermometer into holes in a 1.0 kg aluminum block. The heater was switched on for 300 s. The temperature rose from 22 °C to 37 °C.

Energy supplied by a heater: E = P × t (watts × seconds = joules).

11.Calculate the energy supplied by the heater.
12.Calculate the specific heat capacity of aluminum from these results.
